snowflake challenge 6: Share your favourite piece of original canon.

North is an episode about friendship and forgiveness and father/sonhood. About feeling alone until you've got your buddy. God, it's so good. It's like this little encapsulation of what the show means to me.
If you never watch any other episode of Due South, watch North.
(edited to add) Ray and Fraser are in a plane crash and then stranded in the wilderness.
Fraser is temporary blind so he has to rely on Ray (Vecchio). The ghost of Ray's father tells him to 'cut [Fraser] loose'. But Ray is a better man than his father was.
There's a whole plot about catching a fugitive, too, but that's not as important as...
There's SINGING. There's singing while RAY CARRIES FRASER over his back. It's just wonderful.
It's a wonderful episode.

You can watch it for free on youtube.

for [community profile] snowflake_challenge 5: Talk about what has improved in your life thanks to fandom.

My life before fandom was so different, but a lot has to do with going through a divorce around the same time I entered fandom, so it's hard to differentiate between what good things are because of fandom and what's because of the divorce!

So I'll just say: I have the most wonderful friends. Many, many friends. Lots of people I've known for decades, and some just for a few years, friends who come and go but are always there, you know? Most importantly, there's my BFF. I met my bestie [personal profile] majoline through fandom (through a friending meme here on DW, to be exact) and I've never had a more perfect blessing in my life that wasn't my actual flesh and blood children. I'm not going to spend the whole post gushing about her, BUT I COULD. We talk every day, share the big stuff and the minutia, the ups and the downs. There are lots of downs sometimes, but we support each other. She's awesome. Before fandom, I never had a friend like her.
green: stock image of a fragile snowflake (stock: snowflake)
Since this is the start of a new year, this challenge will be to set your own goals!

* My biggest (and possibly easiest if I keep up with the others) writing goal for the year is to write 150k words, and I'm keeping track of that and getting help with it through [community profile] getyourwordsout

* Finish WIPs: Woo Me Harder, Tiny Alpha and A Cup of Living Gold for sure. I have a few others but those are most important.

* Write more flashfic! It feels like I've forgotten how to write short things. But I can do it! I've done it before and I'll do it again. Helpful with this are [community profile] fan_flashworks and Year of the OTP on Tumblr

* Move more. I don't have specifics on this one, which will make it harder to fulfill, but even if it's just going outside and walking around the yard, I should definitely move more. Maybe I can talk my mother into letting us get another dog.

* Reach out to loved ones (family and friends, too) more often. I've been trying to text my son first instead of waiting until he texts or calls me. I'm usually worried he's too busy (he's in trade school and holding down a job, too) but a text won't throw him off.

And the hardest one:

* Look over the editing notes I got back on my book. I did write a book like two years ago, and sent it to a writer who knows her shit, but once I got the notes back I did not even look at them. To be honest, I'm kinda scared to.
If my book is good and salvageable, that means a lot of damn work, after editing, to get it published and marketing it. (It's M/M and is supposed to be self-published eventually) The marketing part is what I'm most scared about. I'm getting anxious right now just thinking about it. I get amazingly horrible panic and anxiety, on top of a lot of other things.
If my book is NOT good, if I look at the notes and see so much work I'd be better off starting from scratch, then... that'd be kinda okay. SO I guess more than anything I have a fear of success and what it might take to succeed. lolsob

In your own space, talk about a fannish opinion you hold that has changed over time.

OMG FRIENDS. I tried to write a post about how my holier-than-thou attitude has changed and it ended up being a long 'I'm so much better than THESE fans' post! I guess I have a ways to go.

Oopsie.

Starting over:

I wasn't always kind. I used to bash ships or characters. I still do somewhat but only among likeminded people or clearly tagged and I never do it TO FANS like 'omg you suck because you like X'. I used to do that. It's been awhile but the line was very blurry for me.

I used to have a lot of incorrect stances and I was loud about it. I don't even remember what half of those opinions were. I feel bad for souring anyone's fannish enjoyment. I wasn't always a positive ray of sunshine! I'm still not but I try. I used to join communities that were kinda close-knit but negative toward others. So-called 'elite' communities for art. Or for 'better' fanfiction. But I always ended up burned because sooner or later those groups would combust as we turned on each other. There's only so much negativity you can share before every interaction becomes catty and mean.

As I've gotten more (*ahem*) mature, I've learned to seek out positivity in fandom, and to curate my experience. I always want people to like me, so sometimes I do get dragged into negativity still. But I TRY to stay away from it.

Wow, this one really is a CHALLENGE.

Day 12

In your own space, create your own challenge. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

This morning I updated my Fanlore entry. Now I've thought of something I could add to it, but I wasn't thinking of it at the time. I need to add that I have a transformative works statement! I think that's notable.

Anyway, my challenge to you is to

1. Create your own Fanlore entry
or, if you have one
2. Update your entry, or add a notable work.

OR if your entry is up to date

3. If your favorite fanwork doesn't have an entry, create a page for it!

4. and if you've already done all that in the past, create a new entry for a fave fanwork.

Editing a wiki is a little daunting if you've never done it before, but Fanlore has little tutorials and templates to make it easier for you. Look on the left side of the screen for "shortcuts for editors".

If you do it, leave me a note and a link to what you did (if you want).

Day 8
In your own space, post self-recs for at least three fanworks that you created. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

This shouldn't take long since I already had some ready to go for another thing that didn't happen. These are all things I did in 2018. They are all Peter Hale/Stiles Stilinski (Teen Wolf).

Breath of Life

Summary: Stiles's incubus heritage manifests when he's 16. It should be easy to navigate, especially with the help of the Beacon County Supernatural Center. But Stiles has some anxiety issues. (Thankfully he also has Peter.)

Notes: I wanted to write an incubus story unlike any other, and to do so I gave Stiles some of the same anxiety issues I have. His aren't as severe as mine, but it was still cathartic to write.

Promises

Summary: Peter's courting gift is a second chance for Stiles's sick mother. It won't last forever, but it's precious time they wouldn't have otherwise.

Stiles is a just a kid, but he knows a good deal when he sees one.

Notes: This fic also deals with grief and child neglect, so strap yourself in. The sheriff doesn't shine in this one.

I try to picture me without you but I can't

Summary: Peter sends Stiles back in time to get something he needs. It's not what Stiles thinks.

Notes: I loved writing young!Peter. He's such a cocky little shit, but very sweet once he realizes he's found his mate.

Day 5

In your own space, promote three communities, challenges, blogs, pages, Twitters, Tumblrs or platforms and explain why you love them. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

1. [community profile] iconthat - one of the icon communities I follow here on DW. It's a fun, low stakes competition.

2. [community profile] fan_flashworks - another fun challenge, this time for all kinds of works. Any fandom, any kind of works, with fun badges you can win.

3. The Steter Network! On Tumblr, Discord, Pillowfort, and DW. This is my main hangout of fandom these days. [community profile] thesteternetwork on DW is new but I hope it picks up. I spend most of my free time in the Discord. The Steter Network is a group of Teen Wolf writers who enjoy the Stiles/Peter pairing. We hang out on discord and encourage/enable each other. I wouldn't write half as much as I do without them. (for access to the discord, send an ask to [tumblr.com profile] steternetwork)
green: stock image of a fragile snowflake (stock: snowflake)
Day 3

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Okay, last time I did this I posted about my favorite canon scene from Teen Wolf, but this time I'm gonna do a different fandom. I'm not really in the 'fandom' for Assassin's Creed: Odysessy, but I've been playing a lot and I have FEELINGS. My favorite part of the game is a cut-scene of Kassandra (my player character) and Brasidas fighting in the Monger's burning warehouse. It made me ship them, and I don't normally ship het couples. Battle couple all the way. The scene is exciting and pretty. :D

Day 1

In your own space, talk about your Happy Place—the things that give you joy, calms you or keeps you sane. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

1.) Spending time with my kids

My youngest son just turned 17 and is a joy to have conversations with. Sometimes it's frustrating but it's good overall.

2.) Writing

Fanfiction. Not really into original stuff. Been having trouble with this one lately, but I'm hoping the new year will bring the mojo back.

3.) Hanging out with other fans, virtually (or in person, though that doesn't happen anymore)

Especially in the Steter Network discord. But also here on DW!

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

These are stories I think define me as a creator. These are the ones I worked hardest on and put the most of myself into.

Harry Potter

Title: Now See the Invisible
Pairing: Harry Potter/Severus Snape
Rating: R/Mature
Word Count: 7513
Tags: Snape Lives, Post-War, powerful!Harry, magical sex
Summary: Harry's magic begins to grow following Voldemort's defeat.
Notes: written for the 2012 Secret Snarry Swap. I have shipped Snarry for well over a decade now, but I haven't written much of it. This is my best one, I think.

Teen Wolf

Title: Awake and Unafraid
Pairing: Derek Hale/Stiles Stilinski
Rating: NC-17/Explicit
Word Count: 31,047
Tags: Alternate Universe - Fusion, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Alpha Peter Hale, Alpha Derek Hale, Beta Derek Hale, Human Scott McCall, Minor Character Deaths, Alive Claudia Stilinski, Car Accident, Parallel Universes, Magical Stiles Stilinski, Rebuilt Hale House, original non-human characters, Spirits, Spirit Guides, Mates
Summary: Since the car accident that took one of his parents (or both, or neither), Stiles has been living two alternating parallel lives.
Notes: Okay, so. This fic took me years to write. I started it in 2012 but didn't finish and post it until 2015. I'm still not 100% happy with it (if I reworked it, I would be kinder to Peter, for one), but I think it's my most imaginative story, and it was fun to write. It was also a pain in the ass to write, but what good story isn't? I am PROUD of this fic. I don't think I've ever topped this one, plot-wise.

Title: Into the Sea of Waking Dreams
Pairing: Peter Hale/Stiles Stilinski
Rating: PG-13/Teen & Up
Word Count: 6291
Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Season 2 AU, Werewolf Stiles Stilinski, Angst, Mates, Suicidal Ideation, Ableist Language, Ghost Peter, Resurrection, Peter haunts Stiles instead of Lydia
Summary:
"Nothing is happening to me," Stiles says slowly.

"You've been acting weird," Derek says.

I'm being haunted by my dead mate, Stiles wants to say, but he swears he can hear Peter humming. If it's not real, he doesn't want to know.

(S2 AU in which Peter haunts Stiles instead of Lydia.)
Notes: I wanted to write this story for YEARS. It was always in the back of my mind, slowly taking form, so when I wrote it, it felt like it was meant to be. It's one of my favorites.

Snowflake Day 7: In your own space, create a love meme for yourself. Let people tell you how amazing and awesome and loveable you really are.

Welp. Go for it? And if you have done this and I haven't responded to it, send me a link to yours and I'll try to comment.

I'm so anxious over some RL stuff today and all the love and hugs I can get would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, bbs.

In your own space, create a fannish wishlist. No limits on size or type of fanwork; just tell us what you’d like to see.

*Fanart for any of my fics
*More Sentinel/Guide fics for Teen Wolf, especially for Stiles/Peter
(I talk about this all the time and should just go ahead and write one myself)
*A new Stiles icon
*More comments! always, anytime, on anything.
green: heart in a dialogue bubble (stock: love)
In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create.

It's so hard to choose what to rec, but I'm going from what's on my first page of bookmarks.

No One Chooses This Life by lapsus_calami (series)
A Teen Wolf/Supernatural crossover. WIP. Eventual Dean/Stiles
Summary: Stiles wasn't running from his problems. Except he kind of was, but at least he was being productive while doing it. He gave himself one year. One year away from Beacon Hills, away from the pack, away from his dad. One year to get himself pulled together, to stop spiraling into panic attacks, to stop falling into pits of despair, to stop screaming himself awake every night. One year to learn everything he could about his spark, about hunting, about the supernatural. One year so that when he went back maybe, just maybe, he could do more good than harm.

Notes: This is long, unfinished, and the slowest of slow burns, but it's SO GOOD.

Body and Soul by Ragga
Teen Wolf. Peter/Stiles. Complete.
Summary: Do you want the bite?

Yes.

That night changed Stiles' whole life. Now alone, with only his father at his side, Stiles was trying his best not to drown due to his inability to function as an alpha werewolf. On top of that, there was something in the preserve that called for him, someone who would be the answer to his everything. And Stiles?

He would defy even death in order to find his emissary.

Notes: I love the intensity of the Steter relationship in this. It hits allll my buttons.

Silver and Fire by Triangulum
Teen Wolf. Peter/Stiles. Complete.
Summary: Every single day, Stiles is reminded of who he is. "You're an Argent. You're made of silver and fire." He's been trained, honed to be deadly and vicious without remorse. He's been taught to kill monsters indiscriminately because they're volatile and dangerous and need to be put down. He's been taught hate and violence and rage.

The thing is, Stiles also remembers. He pretends he doesn't, because to remember is dangerous, but he remembers the local wolf pack run by his mother's friend, Talia Hale.

Or

Stiles' mother ran away from her family and the Argent legacy. When she and the sheriff die, Gerard is given custody over Stiles and raises him as a hunter.

Notes: I love AUs where Stiles is brought up as a hunter, and this is one of the best I've read.

In your own space, share a favorite memory about fandom: the first time you got into fandom, the last time a fanwork touched your heart, crazy times with fellow fans (whether on-line or off-line), a lovely comment you’ve received or have left for someone. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Most Recently: Staying up late to read clasp it in your hand (hide it in your heart), getting up to reread it, then reading it again the next night.

Years Ago: Having a good Christmas for my kids because DW buddies bought every single thing on their Amazon wishlist.

Several Years Ago: Staying up late to RP, then getting up early to do it some more.

Even More Years Ago: Offering acquaintances LJ codes so they could get their own journal and participate in fandom that way, then later becoming friends with them via that platform.

First Steps in Fandom: Tentatively reaching out to a siterunner and having my first fics published on a real website.

Fandom Snowflake Challenge banner 2018

In your own space, talk about why you're participating in Snowflake and, if you’ve participated in the past, how the challenge has affected you. What drew you to it? What did you take away from it? What do you hope to accomplish this year? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I skipped the past couple of years but I've always loved the positivity that comes from this challenge so I'm back to do it again. The squee and happiness Snowflake Challenge generates is enough to pull me back in. I may not be able to do every day, but I'm going to try.

This year I hope to reconnect with some DW peeps and hopefully it will get me back in the habit of making posts on DW and fandom positive posts in general.

In your own space, create a fanwork. (details/original post)

recs were listed as a possible fanwork, and since I have been sitting on these since Dec 9th when [personal profile] wesleysgirl asked for Torchwood recs, I figured I might as well post them. I meant to put all the recs requests together in one post, but I only got this far and then stuff kept piling on me and making it harder and harder for me to actually write the recs!

(note: Ianto is my favorite, and I do have a tendency to drift toward fics where he's the focus of the story and/or extra badass. also, alive.)

The Intersections Series by [archiveofourown.org profile] NancyBrown -- This is my absolute favorite Torchwood fic series ever. You don't have to read them all; you can start with Intersecting Geodesics if you want to skip the Jenny/Alice stuff, but honestly the Jenny/Alice fics are short and wonderfully done. But IG is where the plotty stuff starts, and it's Jack/Ianto. :D?

My second favorite Torchwood fic is another 'series' (well, a shortish fic and its longer sequel): The Lo-Verse by [personal profile] copperbadge. It is another time travel fic, which are way common in this fandom (which is totally cool with me since time travel is one of my weaknesses!) and I honestly love and adore the Jack backstory and futurestory and everything in between. Also, worldbuilding, because YES. *hearteyes*

Iantowood by [archiveofourown.org profile] jovialien is a long, long series that's a little dark but a lot of amazing. I loved the premise and it gave me hours of enjoyment. There's a recurring theme of sacrificing for love, and yeah, I'm a sucker for that.

Shades of Ianto by [archiveofourown.org profile] sarcasticchick (also the author of the unfinished Windhovers series, which is recced but with caveats 'cause the stopping point leaves you wanting much much more!). SoI's summary is "Ianto is much more than just a teaboy" which should be the default summary of every single Torchwood fic out there, but okay. In this one he is! I guess I'd call him 'heir to the Torchwood legacy' or somesuch. The third and final story in the series is a mild crossover with SGA, and it has dragons.
