SNOWFLAKE CATCHUP POST (days 1-6)

inside this post = fannish rambling, recs, musings, etc.

Day One:

Rec your own fanworks! (details/original post)

Last year I recced one of my vids (Rebel Girl, still my best, IMO), art TBP-era Mikey vector art (also… still my best fanart, I think?), and a fic-like thing I wrote (Choose Your Own - a Mikeyway Adventure). The fiction was really fun, but I don't think it was my best. Just, you know, FUN.

Today I will try, with modesty, to give you my three best fics. "Best" as in, maybe, best written? Mail Order Stiles is my best-received fic to date, but I wouldn't say it's in the top three of my best fics, you know? So, my list:

Title: How To Win Friends and Influence Vulcans
Fandom: (ST:AOS)
Summary: A Kirk&Spock friendship fic, comedic, with Kirk mostly OOC and puppy-like, but I honestly LOVE this fic. It's been podficced twice: here and HERE, which makes me so, so happy.

Title: Music by Hand and Music by Heart
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Summary: Short fic about John's relationship with Atlantis and Rodney. I don't know why I like it so much, but I do.

Title: We Don't Need to Know the Way Home
Fandom: Teen Wolf (fusion/slight crossover with the Killjoys 'verse)
Summary: Stiles breaks Derek out of a BLI facility and there's mates stuff. aka werewolves in the Zones! This is the most recent of the fics I'm proud of. Everything else I wrote last year was a bit too self indulgent for me to see objectively.

Day Two:

Promote communities/challenges/pages/blogs/Tumblrs/Twitters/platforms (details/original post)

I can only tell you the places I go personally, I guess. My fannish circles have gotten stranger lately … I use the tags at Tumblr and AO3 more than anything else, so…

Recent Sterek works at AO3

Sterek tag @ Tumblr

Various wikis: Mass Effect, Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages, Fallout Wiki, and of course there's FANLORE OMGGGGG.

Site thingy: Skyrim Alchemy Lab (super helpful!)

Comms: [livejournal.com profile] iconpraise, [livejournal.com profile] grande_caps.

Oh, wait, I was just supposed to link to three. And I left out [community profile] fancake and that's my absolute favorite. Heh.

Day Three

Rec fanworks (details/original post)

1. The Nonnies Made Them Do It by [archiveofourown.org profile] netweight
Summary: Alpha/Beta/Omega fannish history! Lotsa links. I really love this. Before this was posted I had been thinking a lot about the whole pon farr/veela/in heat/sex pollen/mpreg/soulbond thing and how it all conglomerated into Omegaverse but I had no idea where the fuck the knotting came from. NOW WE KNOW. (damn, those spn folks are kinky)

2. Um, I probably should have done this for Day Two, but the Table of Contents at [tumblr.com profile] bitterandcurt is worth if not a COMPLETE AND TOTAL READTHROUGH, then at least a cursory glance? You know, if you care about that stuff. (stuff = where social justice topics are discussed in relation to media and fandom, but there are also some non-fannish posts)

3. I really love icons and appreciate the amazing talent that goes into making some of the truly captivating ones. I don't talk about this enough. I wish I could go through and name all my favorite makers right now, but I'm mostly drawing blanks because insomnia/pain/meds. Um… [livejournal.com profile] raiindust @ [livejournal.com profile] aintafairytale is an all-around favorite, and also [livejournal.com profile] petite_tomate who posts at [livejournal.com profile] aubedelune because VIBRANT COLORS. Seriously, for some reason when I'm making icons I can just never get bold enough to go that freaking colorful.

Day Four

Comment or introduce yourself to someone new (details/original post)

I am working on it! I added a couple of new people on Tumblr and am commenting more with people in my circle who I haven't had a whole lot of interaction with in the recent past. That counts, right? No? Darn. Okay, I'll do this.

[leaving this space open to come back and say 'OMG I DID IT']

Day Five is redacted because it got too personal about someone who mostly stays out of the spotlight on purpose. But there is a story there that I really want to tell one day, about how [redacted] defriended me because I was an ignorant child in the face of racism in SGA fandom, and how that act led to me doing some heavy research and reading up on race matters and doing an about-face with social justice issues, and got me chatting on a regular basis with [redacted] and really getting to know her, and now she is one of my best friends and someone I admire greatly. She has enriched my fannish experience with her unique way of seeing things. She's actually so very unique that a lot of people just don't GET her, and therefore think they dislike her, and sometimes I want to shake them because she is so very amazing.

Okay, that's all I'm saying about that.

Day Six

Share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life (details/original post)

My Chemical Romance's Life on the Murder Scene video diary. It's an introduction to the band. It's the MCR origin story. It is a good way to get into the fandom, although now things have changed and it makes me sad, but people grow and change and RPF fandom is weird. But anyway, when I first got into MCR, I watched this and fell in love. Talking about it now makes me feel weird, though. Because… these guys are not the same guys anymore. The video diary was recorded in 2005, so it's been almost a decade. But you know, for that moment in time, there was a band and I loved them exactly as they were, and they opened up a whole new world for me, a new fandom, new friends, new music, and a special brand of FUCK YOU, I'M GOING TO LIVE.

OMG, DOES THAT MEAN I'M CAUGHT UP NOW? *falls over dead despite the whole 'fuck you, I'm going to live!' declaration*
