So far, February has been off to a good start. I've done okay keeping up with yoga and the dishes, and I got my first flute practice in early in the month. I have also read one book and started a second, which helps towards my goal of five books by the end of March. I have also been working on my shawl, although I definitely underestimated how much work was left, so finishing it this month might not be possible.

Coming up, I have lunch with a good friend planned, I have plans with my boyfriend for Valentine's day and my sister is putting something together on Sunday for a Galentine's day. It'll be a busy weekend but it should be a lot of fun.

For the rest of the month, I'm going to try to balance getting all my different things done and also finding time to relax. Hopefully I haven't over-scheduled myself and I can avoid feeling overwhelmed by a mountain of things. I'm doing okay so far, but I'm going to keep an eye on this as the year goes on and adjust as needed.

I hope everyone is doing well and staying safe and warm this winter! See you all soon!

This article in the South China Morning Post twice mentions "laisee" without explanation:

China delivery firm offers kneeling service to send Lunar New Year greetings for customers
Paid for holiday festival package includes door cleaning, couplet hanging; critics say offer cheapens sanctity of filial piety, is disrespectful
Zoey Zhang, SCMP (2/12/26)

I remember when I lived in Taiwan (1970-72) participating in the New Year ritual of distributing gifts to respected elders and receiving "red envelopes":

A red envelope, red packet, lai see (Chinese: 利是; Cantonese Yale: laih sih), hongbao or ang pau (traditional Chinese: 紅包; simplified Chinese: 红包; pinyin: hóngbāo; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: âng-pau) is a gift of money given during holidays or for special occasions such as weddings, graduations, and birthdays.  It originated in China before spreading across parts of Southeast Asia and other countries with sizable ethnic Chinese populations.

In the mid-2010s, a digital equivalent to the practice emerged within messaging apps with mobile wallet systems localized for the Chinese New Year, particularly WeChat.

(Wikipedia)

It was an exhausting business, having to run all over the Taipei metropolitan area, calling on relatives and colleagues, delivering gifts and receiving red envelopes.

A Chinese delivery company is offering a “paid-for kowtowing service” in which customers pay US$145 for someone to kneel before their parents if they cannot return home for the Lunar New Year.

A delivery company in central China has sparked controversy by introducing a range of services including kneeling and kowtowing to replace in-person family visits during the Spring Festival.

The SCMP article twice mentions laisee, without explanation.  As noted above, it is written in sinographs as lai6 si6 利是 (lit., "benefit this").  But it is also commonly rendered as lai6 si6 / lei6 si6 / lei6 si5 利市, which can have the following meanings:

  1. profits
  2. (literary) good business; good market
  3. (dialectal) omen of good business
  4. (Cantonese, Hakka, Nanning Pinghua, Guangxi Mandarin, Teochew) red envelope; red packet; lai see (a monetary gift which is given during holidays or special occasions) (Classifier: )
    一百利市
    fung1 jat1 baak3 man1 lai6 si6 bei2 keoi5 laa1. [Jyutping]
Give him a $100 red envelope.

    (Wiktionary)

No matter what you call them — red envelope, red packet, laisee, hongbao, ang pau, etc. — they are all part of the social praxis of "filIal piety" (xiào 孝).

If they fits, they sits. No questions asked.

In a world that's constantly focused on moving forward and improving, it's nice to know that some things stay constant. Like the fact that the Earth revolves around the sun, gravity will always stop us from randomly jumping into outer space, and that cats will always love sitting in boxes and other devious devices. This one specific type of cat picture is our anchor of stability in this fast-paced world, something that doesn't have to change because it's already purrfect. Whether they are big boxes or small ones, square ones or round plastic containers, dishwashers or trash cans, cats will sits in them if they fits in them.

Scroll all the way to the end to find a silly surprise. One of these things is not quite like the others…

This cat must have been a meowsician or a meowstro in his past life because his love for the piano music his pawrents play is simply harmonious. He knows when they're going to practice and will beat them to the piano, relaxing for hours while they serenade him with songs.

Cats never cease to ameowze us. Just when you think you've seen it all, from floofy fluffballs that look like living feather dusters to mama cats working at hardware stores, they go and do something out of left field you never saw coming. Purrhaps they're evolving, or maybe this cat in our story really just found his purrfect family to satisfy his unique and pawsitively melodic tastes.

Animals have been known to enjoy the occasional reggae song or relax to a Bach concerto, but this kitty takes it to a whole new level. His pawrents are purrfessional pianists, and he loves their playing so much that he will literally sleep on the piano while his pawrents play. You'll see below how he sleeps with his stuffed rat in between his paws, mouth open, safely in honk-shoo land while both his pawrents pound on the keys, purracticing for their upcoming show. We've truly never seen anything like it.

They describe something hissterical as well, they say that "he will get angry if we play the wrong note", which means that he must recognize the pieces to some extent. That's honestly incredible. We can barely remember what we had for breakfast, and this kitty can remember classic concertos.

We never once assumed that cats were simple creatures, but this video just confirms that there's more to these fluffy felines than meets the hooman eye. And, as cute as this is, we have to wonder, will they have to play him a lullaby to fall asleep every night? So much for cats being low maintenance!

Anime Check-in: "Bikkurimen" ep. 1-3

bluapapilio: emoji from obey me! (obey me emoji16 shy)

Episode 1: That was pretty interesting!

So there's an Angel Mart and a Devil Mart. In this world, special seals called Bikkuriman are put in with a wafer treat and everyone wants them. The supply truck going to Angel Mart keeps getting attacked, so the truck driver recruits a boy named Yamato (green haired boy) who has a special running power to deliver them.

The bad guys are from Devil Mart and are stopped by the people from Angel Mart. They use the seals on their body to transform into the person on the stamp. The Angel Store manager can turn into Rokoko, a rare seal.

Episode 2: So Demons, Amulets and Angels used to get along, but twin Gods - Child of Light Super Zeus and Child of Shadow Black Zeus descended. They grew up together, but the Devil betrayed the Angel.

Super Zeus ordered the head of the Angels, Phoenix, to go find a new place to live. They took the eight Wakajinshi (literally young-god-children). Phoenix became Head Rokoko. The manager of Angel Mart has the 'Factor' that let's him become Head Rokoko.

I love that while Jack was flustered over Dark Cross's rack, Yamato was disturbed.

Guess Ushikawa is a little prideful.

Episode 3: It's so funny to hear that kind of voice out of a femboy. 😅

So Ushikawa was made to feel weird for liking a set of seals with women saints? Well that sucks, they were powerful women, why shouldn't he admire them? :/

We got to see Ushikawa with his hair down but not Yamato. :(

I am enjoying this anime!

An international research team led by Dr. Lorenzo Marchetti from the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin has described the oldest known impressions of reptile skin from the Thuringian Forest in central Germany. Particularly remarkable is the possible preservation of a cloacal opening within the skin imprint. The fossils, dated to approximately 298 to 299 million years ago from the early Permian period, document detailed scale patterns of the stem group of modern reptiles for the first time. The results were published today in the journal Current Biology.

I finally finished a thing! Somehow, this is the longest single fic I've ever written, and I have no idea why. But here we are. Yay, team.

This fic secretly owes a debt to History Boys - that's where the recurring theme of the subjunctive originated. I find it fitting that my original queer British schoolboy fandom has bled out into my current one.

The Subjunctive Mood (113512 words) by kaydeefalls
Chapters: 15/15
Fandom: Heartstopper (TV), Heartstopper (Webcomic)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Nicholas "Nick" Nelson/Charles "Charlie" Spring, Elle Argent & Nicholas "Nick" Nelson
Characters: Nicholas "Nick" Nelson, Elle Argent, Charles "Charlie" Spring (Heartstopper), Tao Xu (Heartstopper), Isaac Henderson (Heartstopper), Otis Smith | Omar, Sai Verma, Christian McBride (Heartstopper), Imogen Heaney, Tara Jones, Darcy Olsson

Summary:

"The subjunctive is the mood of uncertainty, right? What might have been. Or might be someday. It's…hopeful. You don't know for sure, but maybe." Nick gives Elle a crooked smile. "It's the mood of possibility."

Canon divergence AU: Nick befriends Elle first. Charlie and the others come along as a package deal. And it turns out that accidentally fake dating your bestie gets even more complicated when you catch feelings for someone else...

Happy almost Valentine's Day, everyone! I’m templefugate, and I'm back with my final set of prompts for this week.

As a reminder, we are using a new posting schedule. Sundays are for Lonely Prompts and sharing the fills that you completed during the week, Tuesdays and Thursdays are for new themes and prompts, and Saturdays will remain a Free for All.

Today's theme, in honor of Valentine's Day, is acts love confessions. Other confessions are allowed too, though. Prompts should involve characters confessing stuff, whether deep or seemingly inconsequential.

Just a few rules:
No more than five prompts in a row.
No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
Use the character's full names and the fandom's full name
No spoilers in prompts for a month after airing, or use the spoiler cut option found here.
If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space, or use the above-mentioned spoiler cut.

Prompts should be formatted as follows: [Use the character's full names and fandom's full name]
Fandom, Character +/ Character, Prompt

Some examples to get the ball rolling...
+ DC, Barbara Gordon/Dick Grayson, "I don't know why I waited so long to marry you."
+ Any, any, "I love you more than I love myself."
+ Any, any, a character reveals something on their death bed

We are now using AO3 to bookmark filled prompts. If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3 please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2025 collection. See further notes on this new option here.

Not feeling any of today’s prompts? You can use LJ’s advanced search options to limit keyword results to only comments in this community.

While the use of LJ's advanced search options is available, bookmarking the links of prompts you like might work better for searching in the future.

Because there was good word of mouth from various friends and trusty reviewers, I decided to give the latest Star Trek show a go, have now marathoned the six episodes released so far, and can report that word of mouth was correct: this latest installment, which is set in the 31rd century last seen in Star Trek: Discovery, shows none of the weaknesses of the third season of ST: SNW and is actually really good. Mind you, watching the first three episodes I thought, okay, they're good, not not groundbreaking, and some of the reactions made me expect more, but then came episodes 3 - 6 . building on the previous ones and fleshing out more characters, and I went "wow!" myself. And also "awwwww" at certain points. More beneath the spoiler cut.

The reason why I wasn't wowed by the first three in the way I was by the later three is that they included some clichés I never much cared for, such as a Marine, err, Starfleet instructor yelling "give me 100 pushups" . And the only school/school prank war I enjoyed fictionally was Das fliegende Klassenzimmer by Erich Kästner, plus I thought, really, do we need more mean Vulcans. These nitpicks aside (and the prank war did have its plusses as well), the first three episodes do a solid job in introducing the premise, the setting, and some of the main characters. They also showed versatality in format: the pilot episode has more action while the second episode is a classic ST ethical dilemma with lots of debate type of episode (and not the last one of the first six), and the third episode while having some serious character stuff mainly goes for broad comedy. Which is all fine, and confidence-building, but with episode 4, the show simply becomes more than that as we get our first hardcore (previously supporting) character episode which simultanously is an ethical dilemma episode and adds to the overall Star Trek lore because it tells us how the Klingons fared post Burn, something Disco did not. Now after a quiet spotlight on supporting character episode I expected the next to revert back to ensemble or main character format, but no! We got another " (different) supporting character in the spotlight" episode - which also doubled as an unabashed love declaration to one Benjamin Sisko in particular and DS9 in general. Which was great, because while other more recent ST shows did include some nods to DS9, it never got as much love as TOS and TNG did from the new kids on the block. Until now. And it was especially lovely to see because it did nostalgia right instead of going ST: Picard season 3, sigh, or follow ST:STNW's increasing tendency to become ST: TOS in its cast. Instead, it did a Star Trek: Prodigy. By which I mean: The love for the "old" characters as strong and great - but it was used in service of character fleshing out and growth of the new characters of the new show. Complimenting them, instead of replacing them. Homage, instead of a rerun. It was great. And then episode 6 went for a taut space thriller while also using what we learned so far about the characters and sharpening the profile of who seems to be the season's main villain. (And it took me until this episode to finally recall where I had heard the voice before. It was John Adams, I mean Paul Giametti!)

One more general observation: As a Discovery fan, I was delighted to see Admiral Vance again in most of the episodes, being his calm and responsible self, ditto for Jett Reno snarkng and being dead-pan as ever, and a bit surprised that Mary Wiseman has yet to make an appearance because I thought she was supposed to be a regular. Speaking of Discovery, its last two seasons feature a supporting guest star, Laira Rillak, who has both Bajoran and Cardassian heritage, and I thought that was great and that by the 31st Centuy, there ought to be a lot more "hybrids" of spacefaring nations with centuries of interaction . Starfleet Academy thought so, too, and we got indeed not just another hybrid in the regular cast but also several others popping up. And I really like the sheer number of middle-aged women we get in addition to the kids. Oh, and evidently the return to Discovery territory also meant the return to featured queer relationships. Excellent.

Now onto more spoilery territory with comments on the individiual characters and their development so far. )

In conclusion: it's a really good first season so far! May it continue to be!

We know indoor-outdoor cats are a debate in the cat world, but can we all agree that forcing an indoor cat to go outside is definitely the wrong thing to do?

Personally, we support keeping cats indoors as much as possible. But we do see the other side of it. The cats that we have, we have all had from very young ages. It was early enough to change their habits so that staying only indoors wouldn't feel unnatural to them. But we can imagine that with other cats, it would be somewhat different. We can see how a stray rescued cat might have a problem with being locked indoors all the time. We can see how a cat that has been an outdoor cat their whole life might not take quite so easily to having it taken away from them.

We get that deciding to make an outdoor can an indoor one would be a difficult decision, and sometimes an impossible one. Everyone will have to do what is best for their individual cat, in their specific circumstances, preferably while consulting a vet. It's not an easy decision to make, we know. But you know what is? When your friend tells you that their cat is an indoor one, do not attempt to let the cat out without their permission because of the side that you take in this debate.

So, there are things and then there are Things.  The big thing is that over the past few years I've been having intermittent pain in my right leg and hip.  It started when I was rounding a corner at the Oakland Marathon 5K back in 2023. The only way I can describe it is that I stepped wrong; suddenly my hip got real twitchy and I was thinking, "Well fuck, what is this?"

Cue me not really thinking about it that much until I started having moment's where the muscles in my right leg would go slack for no good reason. i could still move my leg and what not but it just felt like the muscles went dead and then would come back online with everything feeling super tired and the like.  But I kept on with doing what I was doing: walking, biking.  Also sitting because I work from home. I sit a lot. Probably an unhealthy amount.

Anyway, fast forward to last year: my legs hadn't been great which meant I hadn't really been training like I usually do. On a good day, I can knock out 3 miles (my house to downtown Oakland and back) and not even think about it but it was becoming harder to do.  I walked the Oakland Marathon 5K, San Francisco Marathon 5K and Berkeley Half 5K.  The Berkley Half was where I finally realized that something might really not be okay.  The last part of the course takes us into the campus, past Sather Gate and then an incline up towards the Campanile.  I absolutely detest that section but I know it's there and normally I bitch in my head about it but I do it.  Last year I had to stop. Really stop. My hip was barking and so was my leg.  Not good.

I finished but I was also meeting a friend who was doing the 10K so I had to walk down from the Crescent to Civic Center Park where all the festivities were. Not a problem but I could feel my leg twitching and my brain was trying to suss out what I was feeling.  While waiting for my friend, i had a chance to talk to one of the PT folks who was there doing post race assessments (mostly to drum up business), but she did give me some good advice - i.e. it might be this thing but go talk to your primary doctor, which I did; she thought it might be sciatica.  I had some preliminary imaging done; right hip, knee and my lumbar spine.  And got a referral to PT at Berkeley Community PT.

So, the upshot is this: my lumbar spine is compressed like whoa and things aren't real happy which translates to the issues with my hip and leg. I have some degenerative things happening but that's mostly due to age.  I've been in PT for just over a month which means I have homework.I also now have a referral to orthopedics at UCSF.  They'll probably do more imaging and make a recommendation for next steps.

Right now, as much as all of this is a pain in the ass, I am thankful I have full insurance to cover it.  Shirley is also feeling the aches and pains of her job but trying to get her to go get some body work done beyond seeing our chiropractor is a lot.  I make vague noises like, "Hey, you know, the acupuncturist has some time."

The biggest thing in all of this is having to acknowledge that I am getting older (we both turned 60 last year) and my body is changing into a newer configuration. None of what is happening is insurmountable but how I engage with sport and exercise are changing.  Right now, I'm not doing a lot beyond PT because I don't want to aggravate anything. My Garmin sits there and accuses me of not getting enough steps in.Lol.  I do have new trekking poles and I use those for walking for the extra support but I also have a touch of plantar fasciatis right now so I'm not doing a lot of that.

It rains, it pours. I remain salty about it.

Microchip your cats and keep the microchips updated. You never know when they might save your cat.

Cats are curious by nature. Even the most spoiled housecat who had everything that it could possibly want right at its paw-tips will still attempt to run out the door sometimes. It's not because they are unhappy. It's just the curiosity. It's wanting to see the world. It's wanting to go through the forbidden door and see what's out there. Any cat can do it, especially ones on ground floors or houses instead of apartments. You never know when your cat might run away and get lost.

It's heartbreaking when your cat gets lost. You know how spoiled they are, how silly, how much they rely on you. You know that they probably wouldn't survive out there on their own for long. You look for them, you cry for them, but sometimes, they are too far to hear you. But if there's a microchip, then there is hope. Even four whole years down the line, when you have accepted that your cat is no longer coming back, you might still reunite with your cat. Get them microchipped if you can, and if you do, keep that information updated.

pauraque: butterfly trailing a rainbow through the sky from the Reading Rainbow TV show opening (butterfly in the sky)
[personal profile] pauraque
In the 32nd century, Captain Lorq Von Ray assembles a ragtag crew for a dangerous—some would say crazy—mission to harvest the superheavy element illyrion from a dying star. If they succeed, it would threaten tech megacorp Red-Shift's economic stranglehold on interstellar travel, inaugurating a new era of opportunity for struggling outer colonies. But Captain Von Ray's motives aren't just political, they're also personal, as flashbacks reveal his long history with the psychologically twisted brother-and-sister heirs to the Red-Shift fortune.

I really enjoyed this. The space opera plot is an effective backdrop for some nicely nuanced character work and social commentary. Money and class are still driving forces in this future, and people are shaped by that as much as they are by advancing technology and the cultural changes that have come with it. Besides the Captain and the Reds, the other focal characters are two crew members from Earth, one an emotionally guarded Romani kid who's gone against his people's prohibition on cybernetic implants to access job opportunities in space, and the other a socially awkward Harvard grad who has tens of thousands of notes for a novel (an ancient, dead art form) but hasn't yet written a single page. I love the development of their tentative friendship; it feels very honest about how hard it is to relate across cultural divides, and also very affectionate towards both characters. It's like the author is rooting for them even though he can't truthfully make it easy.

The worldbuilding really worked for me. There are enough surprising details and curious asides to make the galaxy feel lived-in and realistically messy, but not so many that it feels scattered. Delany has a very visual prose style and can convey exactly what he sees in his mind's eye, whether it's the unfurling sail of a glittering space yacht or the uneasy twitch of a character's cheek, and that adds to the vivid atmosphere.

I also appreciated the subtle exploration of disability in the context of a society where many things can be medically "fixed" that can't be in our own world. The author knows that this in itself would not "fix" people's attitudes about their own embodiment and others', and that elimination of bodily differences is not a utopian impulse. Characters are allowed to have complex feelings about their physical abilities—the ones they're born with, the ones they've lost, and the ones they've gained through technology—and aren't required to fully explain themselves just because other people want to know.

Criticisms? I think the book has too many characters; some of the less foregrounded crew members don't get much attention and it might have been better to drop a couple so we could spend more time with the rest. The role of female characters is particularly limited, and when they do appear, sometimes their boobs are mentioned for no reason. (I am of course aware that Delany is gay. Perhaps he was subconsciously influenced by what he was reading from other writers at the time.) Other than that, this was a good read.

Content note: A character's pet is harmed, but recovers.
