If there is one thing on this planet that a cat lover can count on, it is the power of funny feline photos to raise their spirits when they are feeling down.

And you know that at this point in the week there is no more hiding the fact that you are burnt out. So we figured it would be just the right time to share with you this collection of hissterical cat photos fresh from their pawrents' photo albums. Because while a good and funny cat meme can go a long way to lifting the spirits of almost any cat lover. The intimacy of getting to see such hilarious moments from the private collections of cat pawrents creates a far funnier feline photo.

So take a deep breath, let your sadness and sorrow go, and start scrolling through these hilarious cat pics to replace those emotions with some pawsitivity. What's the worst that could happen? You smile a little and make everyone at the office think you are a big old softie?

You might have thought that with all the many muscles that cats have to hear and respond to our cries, that they would be great communicators. But as you'll find amongst the lines of this story, that could not be further from the truth.

You know how there are those funny signs with warnings that obviously come from a unique incident carried out by some sort of unique idiot? Well, this story is the feline equivalent of that. A tale of a cat who decides to play hide and seek with the sole intention of getting under his cat mom's skin by hiding under the house. A pitiful prank that almost resulted in the pawrent risking life and limb to check if the idiot cat had gotten stuck on the roof.

Now sure you might be right in thinking that such a story sounds familiar, and there is one that does compare - the boy who cried wolf. And while it is true that this cat child will not be believed the next time that something like this happens, in the original story there is nothing about the boy rubbing it in the town's people's faces that there was no wolf…

Very few people alive today have seen the Appalachian forests as they existed a century ago. Even as state and national parks preserved ever more of the ecosystem, fungal pathogens from Asia nearly wiped out one of the dominant species of these forests, the American chestnut, killing an estimated 3 billion trees. While new saplings continue to sprout from the stumps of the former trees, the fungus persists, killing them before they can seed a new generation.

But thanks in part to trees planted in areas where the two fungi don't grow well, the American chestnut isn't extinct. And efforts to revive it in its native range have continued, despite the long generation times needed to breed resistant trees. In Thursday's issue of Science, researchers describe their efforts to apply modern genomic techniques and exhaustive testing to identify the best route to restoring chestnuts to their native range.

Multiple paths to restoration

While the American chestnut is functionally extinct—it's no longer a participant in the ecosystems it once dominated—it's most certainly not extinct. Two Asian fungi that have killed it off in its native range; one causes chestnut blight, while a less common pathogen causes a root rot disease. Both prefer warmer, humid environments and persist there because they can grow asymptomatically on distantly related trees, such as oaks. Still, chestnuts planted outside the species' original range—primarily in drier areas of western North America—have continued to thrive.

An elephant's trunk is a marvelous thing, flexible enough to bend and stretch as it forages for food, but also stiff enough to grasp and maneuver even delicate objects like peanuts or a tortilla chip. That's because the trunk is highly sensitive when it comes to sensing touch. Scientists have determined that the whiskers lining the trunk are crucial for that sensitivity thanks to their unique structure, amounting to a kind of innate "material intelligence, according to a new paper published in the journal Science.

As previously reported, there is a long history of studying whiskers (vibrissae) in mammals. Rats, cats, tree squirrels, manatees, harbor seals, sea otters, pole cats, shrews, tammar wallabies, sea lions, and naked mole-rats all share strikingly similar basic whisker anatomies, according to various prior studies. Among other potential applications, such research could one day enable scientists to build artificial whiskers as tactile sensors in robotics, as well as learn more about human touch.

Whiskers are much more complex than one might think, both in structure and function. Rats, for instance, have about 30 large whiskers and dozens of smaller ones, part of a complex “scanning sensorimotor system” that enables the rat to perform such diverse tasks as texture analysis, active touch for path finding, pattern recognition, and object location, just by scanning the terrain with its whiskers.

Butter Croissant and Vanilla Cornet from Oyatsupan

Leaving Costco, I realized I was not too far from Oyatsupan, so I took the short detour on the way home. Unfortunately, they were sold out of baguettes, but they had choco and vanilla cornets. And I could compensate for the lack of a nice bread loaf with a butter croissant. These are both treats – indulgences – which aren’t generally on my diet.

Oyatsupan is a little bit out of the way when running errands in Beaverton, and I rarely stop there to get goodies. I have two Oyatsupan gift cards, so today’s dietary indulgence didn’t cost me a cent. I guess today is the day of cheap (but yummy) indulgences.

Costco Food Court

I needed to make a Costco run today to get a supplement I was running low on. Going to Costco for just one item was sort of a waste – but then I decided I could grab a cheap lunch.

It’s been more than 10 years – probably more like 15 – since I’ve eaten anything at the Costco Food Court. Back then, there were no ordering kiosks – and all soft drinks were provided by Pepsico. However, the beef hot dog and soft drink combo is still $1.50 as it was then – a loss leader, for sure. Someday, Costco may have to give up on this crowd pleaser. I thought I should take advantage of the cheap combo while it’s still around.

I had arrived at the Costco before 11:00 am, and it was a shade after 11:00 am when I went up to a kiosk and ordered the combo. The food court wasn’t yet busy, and service was super fast. There were plenty of open tables, and I camped out at one.

The foot-long all-beef hot dog extended past both ends of the good-sized bun. I didn’t think to photograph my lunch, but after lunch I realized it counted as an indulgence, so I regretted the lack of a photo. I took a picture after I’d finished eating.

Coca-Cola is my drink of choice – but I cap my intake at a maximum of 16 ounces a day – preferably 8 or 12 ounces. I put ice in the 20 oz cup and didn’t fill the cup to the top, so there was probably less than 16 ounces in the cup. Neither hot dogs nor Coca-Cola are healthy, so lunch was definitely an indulgence. A very, very cheap one. Who knows? It might be another 15 years before I return to the Costco Food Court.

Meow that energy up!

But what does it really mean? Well, we're here to explain in meowing details. Don't worry, fellow feline fanatics, you're in good hands. Hands that have gone through every piece of cat content the internet has to offer to this date. We're about to let you in on a cautiously kept secret: meowing that energy up for the day is easy when you have feline funnies at your side. When you scroll through cat memes, that cat energy sips right into you, like a soft meow when your cat companion is making biscuits on your chest.

But really, now, what is meowing up the energy for the day? It's all about walking around with cat confidence, it's about letting yourself recharge with cat comfort and coziness, it's all about laughing like a cat meowing for no reason at all in the middle of the night like you must hear the song of their people right at that moment. Meowing up that energy means to make it like a cat - with purride, pawreciousness, and a whole lot of hissterical humor. That's the cat way, that's the way to meow up that energy, like every person probably needs today.

Our cats who crossed the rainbow bridge are never truly gone; they live forever in our hearts. But sometimes, they manifest in unexpected ways.

We're constantly told that the Cat Distribution System sends the cats in need to the right human, the one who will give them all the love they deserve and all the protection they need. In some cases, though, the situation is reversed, but with the same wholesome result - a human might be in need of a cat. Cats love their humans, and some people simply need a little more floofy friendship in their lives. In this case, the CDS sends a can in need to a person who's also in need. But what we learn from this one cat pawrent below is that the CDS takes requests.

Just requesting a cat doesn't usually work. But apparently, there's a certain condition in which a person's wish for a cat can come true in a very short amount of time. That is, if you ask it from your soul cat who has passed over the rainbow bridge to the other side. A woman who raised a cat for 19 years(!) made just one wish - bring me another cat, if you will, I will take him in. And so, her new cat came to be.

Hello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.

Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?

There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.

This Week's Question: What is your favourite thing to make?

If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.

I now declare this Check-In OPEN!

"Hate brings views": Confessions of a London fake news TikToker:

London is being used as the backdrop for inaccurate viral videos that reach enormous audiences around the world by playing into the worst stereotypes about the capital.

This was an investigation into one man who was doing this thing:
Last summer, the man says, he found himself sitting in his car, analysing trends on TikTok. His day job was conducting viewings for an estate agency but he was trying to come up with an idea for a viral video account that could be run as a money-making side-hustle.
“I was thinking of unique videos I can do for people,” he says on the tape.
That’s when he had a brainwave: “Hate brings views.”
At that time protests outside asylum hotels were spreading across the country. The man says he noticed “far-right people” were among the most engaged on TikTok. They were easy to rile up: “They hate such videos of illegal migrants. I was like, why not?”
....
The TikToker appears to have no concept of the potential real-world impact of his uploads, instead considering everything in terms of view counts and pieces of content.

So he made fake videos about immigrants being housed in prime properties, to which he had access through his job.

He had originally found he could make money through posting videos on TikTok but 'TikTok immediately deleted his account because he was just stealing other people’s videos and reposting them'.

There seems to be just a total disconnect going on in the guy's mind (or he's just ethically vacuous) and generally he does not appear the sharpest blade in the drawer:

Despite fostering online hatred, the man recorded.... insists he doesn’t personally share the views expressed on his TikTok account. Instead, he suggests his fake anti-migrant house tour videos were just a way to game the algorithm, build an audience, and hopefully make money.

He's also
baffled. He can’t understand how London Centric traced his anonymous hate-filled London TikTok account back to his employer by geolocating the wheelie bins in his videos.
“I thought no one’s gonna notice that,” he says. “Why would someone?”

As if people aren't doing this sort of thing all the time.
