These zines I made a few weeks ago of Urs exploring photography post-s1, now uninhibited by whatever associations she had to the activity, seemed like a nice way to interpret "the explorer" as a theme :)

Cats are the overlords of the house, and we are just their humble servants.

And as human cat lovers, we're totally okay with that arrangement. We win either way, doting on a kitty overseer with all of our might, hoping they'll one day courey favor in the form of freshly made biscuits. For when a feline decides to make biscuits on your tummy, your lap, or your chest, you've been rewarded 10-fold for your loyal servitude, and it makes every midnight laser pointer game, every tin can of wet food, and every scratched-up ankle worth it.

Although they run the house with an iron fist and a sprinkling of kitty litter in the bathroom, cats are fair and just rulers. Judging out transgressions from atop the refrigerator, cats see all and decide the fate of their humans. While they love us, clearly, they also want us humans to remember our place in the world: Second, of course, to the floofy kitties.

If you've found a fellow cat lover who shares your affinity for the mewghty overlords, they can become your closest confidante. Cherishing cats is more than just a hobby or a passing of the time, but an honorable, life-long mission. Cats don't get nearly as much love as they deserve, so when you combine your interest with another cat lover, suddenly your love is compounded. Cats know this. It's for this reason that the kitties at the rescue, the ones on the street, and the freshly delivered batch of kittens from the CDS seek out cat lovers who are friends or partners with other cat lovers. Exponential cat affection is the name of the game here.

When we hear the pitter-patter of their dainty paws running towards the kitchen, we know it's their dinner time, but also our favorite moment of the day. In exchange for their timely meal, cats reward us with a face rub, a flickering tail, and an adorable mew to melt our hearts. Win-win. Purrhaps cats know more than we give them credit for, huh? It's these meowticulous cat moments that make us question ourselves, because cat supurreority is real and every cat owner can attest to it. Do we love this arrangement? Of course. Will we ever question the love of our cats again? Certainly not.

Now, carry on and enjoy some cat memes that are bound to please the over rulers as much as they are guaranteed to boost your mood.

Picking up a book called Part Time Girl about a high school kid who switches (physically, magically, inconveniently) back and forth between Being A Boy and Being A Girl, I was like, okay, I know pretty much what the vibes of this are going to be. And the first couple chapters in which protagonist Michael/Kayla worries about a Sort Of Girlfriend and a Hot Boy and I Have Taken This Part Time Job As A Girl But Now I Need Girl Clothes, Bra Shopping! So Stressful!! did not really lead me to think anything different!

Then about 40% of the way through the book our protagonist was suddenly running through the woods from evil wizards, and I'm like, okay, this I did not expect.

It turns out the plot of this book is NOT high school drama and figuring out your complicated gender feelings! The plot of this book is that evil racist homophobic wealthy wizards called the Clan (yes) run the world and you have to team up with your traumatized neighbor to fight them, while also figuring out your complicated gender feelings along the way.

Also, the protagonist and the traumatized neighbor bond by hanging out and watching the 2014 kdrama Healer, the plot and cast of which is lovingly described in text. This is in fact plot relevant because they later use their arguments over which cast member is hotter to prove their identities to each other when it's in question. Now I do love Healer but given that it came out, again, in 2014 and I haven't heard anyone talk about it pop culturally in more than a decade, this possibly surprised me even more than the evil wizards.

I can confidently say that at no point did I predict some of the major turns this book took, and I will put them under a spoiler in case you, too, would like to experience this Experience as I confidently believe it was meant to be Experienced: here we go! for the ride! )

Day 11 Theme - The Explorer

Today's theme is The Explorer.

Here are some ideas to get you started: She's a fearless go-getter, maybe not necessarily going where no one has gone before, but definitely heading to some place or in some venture that she hasn't taken part in yet. What new territory is she exploring? How does she feel when she's stuck in the same place or situation for too long?

Just go wherever the Muse takes you. If this prompt doesn't speak to you, feel free to share something that does. You can post in a separate entry or as a comment to this post.

Want to get a jump start on tomorrow's theme? Check out the prompt list in the pinned post at the top of the page. Please don't post until that day.

Just finished: Changelog by Rich Larson. I don't have much to add from last week other than, surprise surprise, the last few stories were also amazing. One of the ones towards the end, "You Are Born Exploding," is probably the best one? I don't know which is the best one. It's about a mother whose young son is dying while increasing numbers of people in her seaside town are turning into zombie sea monsters, some of them voluntarily. Look, you can read it for free!

Sequel: An Anthology, edited by Chenise Puchailo. This collection is a sequel to Spud Publishing's first anthology, Debut (okay I find this, and everything about the press, very adorable, like a little middle finger in the face of SEO), and features six new authors and five new illustrators in Canadian genre fiction. I'm just really glad this exists, you guys. It gives me hope. It's like, very scrappy and indie and most of its focus is on the Prairies and interior BC, which is deeply underrepresented in fiction generally and in genre fiction even more so. It's not out yet but it should be launching in the spring.

Currently reading: The Threads That Bind Us by Robin Wolfe. Look, there are about six or seven of you who need to drop whatever you're doing and read this immediately. I'd have binged the entire thing in one night except that I felt like that wouldn't do it justice and I needed to slow down and read it in two nights instead.

This is a collection of twelve memories from queer and trans folks, written in their own words, which Robin then illustrates with symbolic embroidered textile art pieces (and a brief explanation of how the final embroidery relates to the story). It's devastating. The first story is about a teenager taking care of his leather daddy's friends who are dying of AIDS. There are moments of grief, love, and startling joy. It's the kind of thing where I just start directly texting friends who need to read it yesterday.

My only regret here is that the shipping somehow cost more than the book so I bought it in ebook form, which is probably actually better in terms of my seeing the details of the embroidery, but I'm sure the hard copy makes for a stunning physical artifact.

Anyway I am blown away so far and need you to read it so we can scream together.

Falling passionately in love is one of the most talked about human experiences, celebrated in songs, movies, literature, and art across cultures. Passionate love is widely considered a hallmark of romantic relationships and has well-documented psychological and behavioral effects. Yet until now, research has overlooked a surprisingly basic question: How many times do people actually experience passionate love over a lifetime?

An older one, but a surprisingly good song. I am not a Coldplay fan, so why I like the Chainsmokers, I have no idea. It definitely makes me think I should listen to some of Coldplay again and see how I feel now that they're not being shoved down my throat on the airwaves. But this song, I like. It's on a goodly chunk of my playlists, most notably, my interview playlist, which I listen to when I need a pick me up, or when I have an interview. It's not quite as inspiring as This is the Moment, even if in the play it's the moment of absolute hubris. But there's something very good about the lyrics if you can ignore the context. I listened to it on Friday while I drove to the interview for the job I don't want.

They have not yet gotten back to me, and the job posting is in limbo while our HR person is traveling. Argh. I am not patient, dammit. On the other hand, a friend from IKEA who I referred had her interview on Monday, so hopefully she hears back relatively quickly. I think she'd be a good worker, and she hates IKEA so much.

The boss either slipped during the interview, or said exactly what she meant when she said "You'll have an offer by the end of the week." The friend thinks that she meant "you'll know by the end of the week, but I'm not so sure. I mean, I've turned my job into something completely different by being smart and proactive that is infinitely more useful than just taking calls, and the other friend who's been there a year is beloved and doing great, so it's pretty good odds, I think. Plus the bosses love me. But we'll see!

Yesterday was good. I got a lot done, a lot of new Cardiacs filled for Columbia. We're getting to the end of how many I can scheduled solo, I think. I've looked through most of April and the appts are in March, so It could be tough from here on out. Aside from that, I took calls, filled more Cardiacs, and generally did my thing.

Right now, I'm watching the queue to see how the phones are doing while I'm doing the admin stuff. And if I see more than 8 or 9 in there, I'll hop in.

I do know our trainer asked for documentation of some of my tricks, so apparently that'ls being added to the curriculum, which is cool. Adding created training materials to my resume. That always sounds good. My resume is long, but one more line won't hurt.

Today shall me more of the same, I think. Filling in Columbia, taking a few calls, and just generally being a little happy Sunbeam. Work doesn't get any of my shit, of course. They pay me to be kind and functional, Not that I have anything to be angsty about. I'm pretty happy right now. Which is kind of weird to say. The world is a dumpster fire, but all I can do is what I can do, and try to keep my mental health on an even keel. So far, so good.

Today is payday, which is lovely. I have a few bills to pay, and then the rest shall go into savings to prepare for Alaska. I'd like to have decent money in all three accounts, since I know the hotels and boat will all put holds on the cards, so I'd like to have two for those and one for fun.

Tonight, I will make Turkey or beef bulgogi. Depends on if I get off my ass this morning to make the Bulgogi marinade. It's some chopping and grating, so it's a little time consuming. I also need to make sure one of the Korean pears is ripe to grate.

Tomorrow, I will have the other. We got a small upright freezer (like 3 feet high, front loading), so I ordred a bit of meat to put in it. I'm also going to go through our freezer this weekend. We have so much shit that is probably freezer burned that needs to go. Once done, between the two, we'll have plenty of tasty and accessible food. Right now, it's terrifying pulling out something, because everything is jenga'd in there so tightly.

I've got baby back ribs, pork chops, chicken and Polish Sausage coming tomorrow. There's a local butcher who delivers, so I've been using them. The meat is far superior to the grocery store. I did get some from the Asian Market as well, since they have bulgogi and stirfry meat.

Okay, time to decide if I want to make bulgogi marinade, shower or both. Everyone have a wonderful Wednesday!

Snickering is a new cat love language, so snicker away.

Laughter is the best medicine, so they say. If you really believe something then it can be true. Cats are natural born laughter machines, they're gigglers, snickerers, and comedic genius. Humor is innate to their whiskers, pointed ears, and fur. What do you think they're doing when they knock your keys off the table? They're laughing behind your back! And speaking of comedy, Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors is one of his earliest and most chaotic plays. It's exponentially more and more chaotic and confusing, hence its title. It's built entirely around confusion, mistaken identity, and absurdity. Antipholus of Ephesus and his identical twin Antipholus of Syracuse are separated in infancy. Unaware that their other half exists wandering around with the same face and DNA in the same city, they cross paths, with in turn causes the decline of everyone's known reality. Ordinary interactions become intertwined with absurdity, confusion, and dissociation.

The play ultimately is about reunion and restoration. Though it lacks a certain poetic depth compared to his later works, it's still precise and genius in its comedic timing, its themes of identity and self-knowledge, and slapstick humor. The confusion resolves when the twins are finally brought together, revealing the truth of their identities. And even if you're not a huge Shakespeare fan, you can still get behind the notion that laughter is the best medicine. Cats give us joy, they give us laughter, and they like to laugh themselves. Not everything has to be hard, a giggle a day goes far.
