When you see an animal in need, don't wait, don't ask, just save them.

It's beyond cruel to think that a cat or other animal can exist outside in the depths of winter. In minus 10 degree weather, even an "outdoor cat," or "barn cat" can't survive. The woman in the story sees her neighbor's cat outside, and the weather news is increasingly dismal. There were several warnings about not letting animals outside, even outdoor pets. People were also not completely safe from these weather warnings. She politely goes to her neighbor and relays the information from the news that pets shouldn't be outside. The neighbor reassures her that she can be outside and will be fine since she's a barn cat. The woman can see the cat suffering – she makes her move. She calls the cat's name in the cold, and the cat comes running. Immediately the cat is at ease. They snuggle up under the covers together, she feeds her Fancy Feast and rotisserie chicken. The cat is purrfectly happy and at ease, and the woman is too. Even after several days, the real owner doesn't say anything or claim her.

Kumbali, the cheetah cub, was losing weight and his caretakers stepped in to provide 24/7 support, but this also became a double-edged sword. Cheetahs can become anxious when they lack the proper social support system they normally have from their litters and mother, both of which Kumabli was lacking. He needed a miracle, and one showed up with four legs, a wagging tail, and the need to make a lifelong friend.

It's not uncommon knowledge that cheetahs are anxious animals. We've all seen the cute headlines or pictures of a full-grown cheetah lying next to a dog that is, quite literally, its emotional support animal. This concept has been around since it was introduced by the San Diego Zoo in the 1980s. But that has been the extent of our knowledge of this unique and adorable relationship… until now. In 2015, the Richmond Zoo publicized the story of their uniquely adorable friendship between Kumbali, a struggling and lonely cheetah cub, and his now lifelong best friend, Kago, a rescue puppy who healed him.

Kumbali was lacking the proper socialization a young cheetah cub needs from his litter or mother. He was isolating himself and almost stopped eating entirely. The staff thought he needed a confident partner in life to raise his spirits, so they introduced him to Kago. At first, their relationship was a little rocky, but then something incredible happened. Where there was fear, it was replaced with curiosity. Where there was avoidance, they found companionship. And it started to look more and more consistent day after day.

Even as Kumbali aged and his instincts matured, and as Kago became an adult dog, their relationship never changed. They still play despite the overwhelming difference between them. They kept choosing each other, day after day, and the two couldn't be happier.

The pair became widely popular on the internet not just because they were cute, but because their relationship was real. It was authentic love between two wildly different animals. Kumbali and Kago show us that our differences are not something that should spread us apart, but allow us the opportunity to build bridges for greater understanding, depth, and love.

Everyone needs an emotional support item, and that very much includes cats.

Life can get pretty stressful. For us, it's money, relationships, news. There's a lot that stresses us out. We look at our cats and think that we wish we could be them, that their lives are so chill and purrfect. And yet, stress is relative. And cats get stressed out too. Sometimes, it's the wind blowing in the wrong direction. Other times, it's sudden noises that spook them. Sometimes, it's humans closing doors that were open two seconds ago. Other times, it's humans not letting you steal food off their plate

It's all relative. And because our cats get stressed out too, then they - just like us - also need emotional support items. It could be emotional support snap peas, or a headband, or a Lego bag that they just love getting into when they need a little space. They get creative with their emotional support items. But when they find them, they cling onto them, and you, as their human, better never dare remove these items from your home, even when they break apart or start smelling. Your cat needs these items, especially when they zoomie straight into a wall int the middle of the night.

small victories.

1). The sourdough starter appears to be working. I made English muffins with it tonight. They were good! I'm going to try baking bread this week; we'll see how it turns out.

2). I applied for two jobs. One, I am massively overqualified for (it's a temporary position within public works for the city — basically I'd be doing as-needed water quality testing).

The other is a part-time writing gig for a publication I'm familiar with thanks to Hobby Reasons. Saw that they were hiring, immediately went, "!", and since they said zero experience required, figured I'd shoot my shot. I am incredibly unlikely to get it, but this is The Year of Becoming Comfortable With Rejection, so, you know, if I hear back with anything that's not a form, "we've decided go to forward with another candidate...", I will be a happy creature.

3). Someone I don't know left me a really lovely comment on a thing I wrote (and posted to AO3, and will share when it's no longer anonymous i.e. after the collection fully reveals). It was just really well-timed and genuinely kind, and I very much needed it. ♥

EDIT 2/11: I did in fact get rejected. They were extremely kind about it and encouraging about pitching to them, but they want someone who has experience specifically on the back end that I do not. The rejection was personalized and encouraging, so that felt...weirdly good? Huh.

* I realized that the fictional hockey team name in this original fic would not work. Klickitat Cats is an amazing sounding name, a Portland reference and a cryptid reference. But the street/region name comes from a local tribe and no way would a Portland team would overlook that and use the name that way unless they were themselves Klickitat.

Poly-b-us would be an amazing pun name for a local team, but the amount of Portland brain rot you'd need to fully get it is too much. Like, a team would use the name but the layers would be lost on readers. (Could use it as a one-off background joke, though. Also, Oregon is the Beaver State so I'm surprised none of our IRL recc league teams haven't snagged Beaver Skate)

* Guess who walked 2.6 miles for a PDXWLF exhibit that turned out to not be there? Yup, that's our PDXWLF. I think I am going to hit one more location, one that I am hopeful for, and call it good for this year.

* Heated Rivalry related link - This is a really good breakdown as to how Shane and Ilya being in the same division effects them and the story.

I decided to buy the professor price tickets to the Bourbon City Steampunk in Louisville KY in May. It's the same weekend as graduation. I also put in to do 2 lectures (one I have done since it was my sabbatical and one I shall have to pull forth from my ass) Wish me luck

Today I did find a phone number for recollection clothing and I shall be calling about my dress I've never seen (probably friday as it's the next time I have time) I didn't call United Health Care today because my phone was being a dick.

I did call this collection company knowing it almost couldn't possibly be for me. I haven't been in that kind of mess in years but Penny Williams (the other pain in my ass) who had my telephone number in the early 00s STILL gives it out to avoid collection agencies. This time it was for some man I never heard of.

Today was 20 degrees colder than anticipated.

1. Got my teeth cleaned today and since Carla was awake before my appointment (which was at 8:30am), she was able to drop me off so I could just walk home. The dentist is a good walking distance away, but with my appointment being on the early side, I wouldn't have had time to cool off once I arrived, and I didn't want to risk being hot and/or sweaty and having to get right in the chair. But I did get a nice walk on the way home, though, and it was fully overcast, which is definitely my preference for walks.

2. Since the dentist appointment was a good excuse and I didn't really have a pressing reason to go into the office, I just worked from home today. I think I'll have to go in every day the rest of the week, so it was nice to stay home today.

3. I love these sunny window shots!

There were indeed a lot of American Robins in Wildcat Canyon this morning.:) U reported seventy, and there seemed like that many Lesser Goldfinches, given how much chatter and song we heard. I missed the Townsend's Warbler and a White-throate Sparrow that U and Chris saw on Upper Packrat but heard a Pacific Wren and heard/saw two Allen's Hummingbirds that they did not. The second Allen's was feeding on and defending a big ribes that we've always checked out when walking the upper trail, but he wasn't visible when they went by. The list: )

A pair of Mallards flew in, landing on Jewel Lake with two quiet splashes while I was sitting on the bench waiting for U and Chris, so that was convenient.

A bond between a dad and a kitten he never wanted is the strongest bond in the world.

If you think the cat distribution system is kind to certain hoomans, you would be absolutely… correct. Some people wait years until they are blessed by a cat from the distribution system, while others find themselves in a possesion of a kitty every other week.

However, it seems there is a certain selection of people who are always on the cat distribution system radar, and those people are Dads. We all know at least one duo of a dad and a cat, and the origins of their love stories all sound similar: someone in the family finds a kitten, brings the sweet baby in need home, Dad says no, the cat stays anyway, Dad is grumpy about it for a few days while the kitten is determined to win Dad's heart, until the kitten eventually succeeds.

All these households then have what we call the "Classic Dad-Cat Duo", an inseparable bond between a dad and a cat he swore he would never love. This duo does everything together: They hang out, share hobbies and interests, eat, and of course, nap. The love between the two is something cosmic, one that even the most magical fairytales can't compete with.

Is that the case in the story below? We will let you be the judges of that…

1) It's surprising to me that it's been a month since I last posted...here. I have been posting every week in communities, but simply haven't completed some write ups and reviews I wanted to make.

However speaking of communities, [community profile] marchmetamatterschallenge will be starting up again on March 1. If you've written meta, join in and copy your meta over to an additional location for both discovery and safekeeping! More details at the community link.

2) We were watching Colbert and his wife Evie was on. For Valentine's Day they read through her 12 year old writings about what she considered the perfect guy for her. Among her notes was that he should be "all man." This made my partner remember an event in hockey where a player was placed in the penalty box because his team had too many players on the ice. The TV caption however, as they showed him sitting there was "Too much man." I found this hilarious.

3) I daresay the article Stop Meeting Students Where They Are is relevant to various readers here. They key to me is that (a) younger online users are starting to intentionally reduce their time there, and Read more... )

4) Love how the same people scolding audiences for preferring to watch movies at home, don't go to the cinema even when it's free. "The Academy has long hosted screenings of Oscar-hopefuls for its members throughout the year in Los Angeles, the Bay Area, New York and London, and then again after the announcement of the Oscar nominations.

But in recent years — particularly over the seven years since the Academy introduced its members-only streaming service, the Academy Screening Room, through which members can watch films at home — attendance at all of these screenings has markedly declined.... “an average of five members attended these screenings in the last two years,” ...which reportedly cost the organization thousands of dollars a pop. So the Academy decided to save resources by eliminating them altogether." Aside from the Academy members can view movies on the big screen at the many showings hosted by the nominating studios. They just choose not to, just like most other viewers.

5) We finished watching Bodkin, which I will agree was an interesting view, though I had trouble getting into it, primarily because I was not fond of any of the main characters. A few episodes in the mystery was developing and I was fairly satisfied with how that unfolded and its complexity.

My big problem was that Netflix had labeled this "Comedy." Read more... )

Wound care exposing a pregnancy.

[personal profile] dreadlordmrson posting in [community profile] little_details
Would hospital care after minor dog attack injuries expose a first trimester pregnancy?

Details:
I have a story I'm currently working on set in a modern type world, and a plot point where one of the two main characters is attacked by a pack of street dogs and gets some minor scratch and bite injuries. I'm thinking just a few stitches at most. I can guess they'll need "just in case" antibiotics and rabies shots because of the bites, but would common care involve any tests that would expose an early pregnancy?

Goals:
I'm trying to keep the pregnancy a surprise for the other main character later in the story, so a "some hospitals would do these tests but some wouldn't" could be ruled that this time it wasn't done. But if it's very common to do certain blood or other tests that would easily reveal a pregnancy, that's a problem. And having the other main character who's acting as their savior/caregiver in this scenario decide not to get them treatment wouldn't be in character or suit his arc in the story, even with minor wounds that in theory could be treated at home.

Do I need to change details of the attack, or depict this medical team as negligent? Or is the stealth of this pregnancy safe?

In my head, there was backstory about how Cassie asked Sam for homework help because Janet was busy treating SG-3 who came back from offworld with a mysterious blue rash.
