So, after nearly two years, I've finally changed my profile in engstars...

BECAUSE I GOT MADARA'S GLOBAL EXCLUSIVE CARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm so excited; he looks so good and I love him and I do not want to talk about how much I spent to max this card XD Very glad to have a supportive wife (who also maxed a global gacha card last year, so we're in it together lmao).

Also, I wanna change the card layout to include Kohaku at some point but I'm not feeling creative enough XD So right now it's just Mr. Ice Cream Thief as a testament to my spending problem devotion ♥

sobs I love them ;w;

I wanna make some new icons with his new outfit but I have to figure out what MV(s) to record him in...it's such a specific look that I feel like I don't quite know where I wanna put him :T

also I have icon challenges I wanna do but my brain is just MAMAMAMAMAMAMAAA soooooo

1. After much back and forth about it, it's finally settled that I will be going up north to help the new store for a few days, and the dates are set (next Wednesday through Friday). I would prefer not to go at all but I'm glad it's at least sorted, and I am curious to see the new store.

2. We went down to DCA for dinner tonight and had some very tasty lunar new year foods.

3. It's been fairly cool all day today and by the time we got home from Disney it was really windy and cold. It's supposed to tonight and maybe a little tomorrow. Hopefully it's all just overnight and not anything that will interfere with going out of the house tomorrow.

4. Jasper!

A map of Australia depicts near-surface air temperatures, where most of the country is warm, shown as orange to red. Extreme heat is concentrated over the southeast, and a small cooler blue area appears in Western Australia.
January 29, 2026

While a part of the United States braved extreme winter cold, January 2026 brought sweltering summer conditions to many parts of Australia.

Australia’s area-averaged mean temperature was 1.90 degrees Celsius (3.42 degrees Fahrenheit) above the 1961–1990 average, making it the fourth-warmest January since the start of observations in 1910, according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM). Contributing to this was a late-month heatwave in the country’s southeast that was especially intense between January 26 and January 30. During that period, numerous weather stations in South Australia, New South Wales, and Victoria recorded record-high daily temperatures.

The heatwave’s intensity and extent are evident in this map, which shows air temperatures at 03:00 Universal Time (2 p.m. local time in Victoria) on January 29, modeled at 2 meters (6.5 feet) above the ground. It was produced with a version of the GEOS (Goddard Earth Observing System) model, which integrates meteorological observations with mathematical equations that represent physical processes in the atmosphere. The darkest reds are where the model indicates temperatures reaching or exceeding 45°C (113°F).

According to BoM, the hottest temperatures of January 2026 were measured in two places in South Australia: in the town of Andamooka on the 29th and at the Port Augusta airport on the 30th, where temperatures reached 50.0°C (122.0°F). In both New South Wales and Victoria, the month’s hottest day was on the 27th, when temperatures reached 49.7°C (121.5°F) at a station in Pooncarie and 48.9°C (120.0°F) at stations in Walpeup and Hopetoun.

The heatwave brought significant human and public-health effects, including the increased risk of heat-related illness. Organizers of the Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne, Victoria, suspended play on some courts and closed roofs to provide shade as part of an “extreme heat policy” to protect players and spectators, according to news reports.

The recent warmth followed another bout of heat earlier in the month that, combined with strong winds and dry conditions, created dangerous fire conditions. Numerous bushfires were burning across Victoria on January 9 as officials urged people to evacuate. By mid-month, news reports indicated that the fires had destroyed hundreds of structures and killed tens of thousands of livestock.

Posted by Ask a Manager

It’s five answers to five questions. Here we go…

1. We have to demote a really dedicated manager

I’m involved in a small, local nonprofit animal shelter. I started as a volunteer and am now an officer of the board. Two years ago, our very competent office manager quit. After two crash-and-burn failed hires, one of our part-time kennel help wanted to try to step up into the position. On a trial basis. Over a year ago. And while she was never officially given the job, things just … limped along. Kasie is awesome in many ways, great with people and incredible with the animals. But she lacks the initiative and judgement to successfully fill this role. I will add she is open about having ADHD, which (from what I’ve read) is probably the source of her shortcomings.

For the last year or more, we have been operating with the board president fulfilling way too many of the manager responsibilities for Kasie, which is not sustainable. One of our long-time board members, Jane, is willing to step into the job and has been hired with a tentative start date soon.

Kasie is a very dedicated employee, and being manager of our animal shelter is way more than just a paycheck to her. I’m comfortable stating this is her dream job. She knows Changes Are Coming and has voiced she has no plans to leave, but I want to make this change as smooth as possible.

I guess I’m looking for advice on moving someone who is dedicated to a cause to step down to a lower position and accept a new manager. I’m also wondering if ADHD is (or should be) a factor in dealing with any of this.

Has someone been giving Kasie feedback all along and is she aware that the board didn’t think she was performing the role successfully? If so, this is a lot easier because it will be a logical extension of that conversation, which you can frame as, “As you know, we’ve been concerned about X and Y and need someone in this role who can do Z. The work has been suffering in ABC ways and we’re now at the point where we need to bring in someone to run things differently. We’d like you to move to focusing on DEF while Jane takes over the manager role.”

But if no one has been giving Kasie clear feedback, this is messier! You’d still use the basic framing above (without the “as you know”) and be candid about the ways in which things haven’t been working … but in that case, the board should recognize its own role in making this harder, and use this as impetus to commit to being more forthright about concerns in the future.

Also — make sure you’re not hiring Jane just because she stepped up, or you risk the same situation you had with Kasie. The board needs to be really clear with Jane (and with itself) about what doing the job well looks like and needs to be more hands-on about ensuring the new staffing decision is working out.

2. Our training about hostile work environments feels like a hostile work environment

I work at a small but thriving business with a small group of employees at headquarters (myself among them) and a larger contingent of contract workers at other locations.

Our city and state require all employers to adopt a sexual harassment prevention policy and to provide employees with sexual harassment prevention training. While most places I’ve worked complete this requirement using an online curriculum consisting of pre-recorded videos and multiple choice questions, this business teaches it live via video call with a member of the C-suite who is not in charge of HR. (In fact, as far as I can tell, we don’t have a dedicated HR team; HR-related duties are instead spread across a number of directors and execs along with their other duties). This class happens in a video call with the executive (“Kyle”) and about 20 other participants at a time, cameras are required to be on, and he will call on anyone and everyone at some point during the class to answer questions.

I’m sure this format works fine for some people, but I find it deeply uncomfortable. His blunt delivery on some of these topics leaves a really bad taste in my mouth (“Pop quiz, if nobody else is in the office and two coworkers at an equal level decide to have sex on their desk, is it technically harassment? Jane, you’ve been quiet, I bet you have an opinion on this”). There are also scenarios in this training that are sadly relevant to my personal history in a way that other people in the office are definitely aware of (and to a certain extent Kyle is also aware of), so I feel really exposed having my face on camera for that — or worse, being called on to answer pop quizzes that hit too close to home. I’m sure other people aren’t thinking about me as much as I am in those moments, but after the last session I wound up in the bathroom crying and I really don’t want to repeat that experience.

I reached out to Kyle and my manager and asked if this year I could fulfill the requirement with a pre-recorded version of the training instead (the city provides one on their website free of charge). I used the word “accommodation” and directly referenced why this training is difficult for me without getting into sordid details. I immediately received a phone call from Kyle stating that he does not believe the training provided by the city government and authorized by the state are legally compliant with city and state regulations (both city and state websites say it is), but further that he doesn’t want to accommodate requests for alternate training because “holding these trainings in-house is a huge source of revenue for the business.” (Your guess is as good as mine about what that means. If I had to guess, I bet we pass the cost of training the contractors on to their companies as part of the services they contract us for.)

This is bonkers, right? Is it legal? I did ask him if he was saying that the revenue stream was more important than the risk of creating a hostile work environment during a training about hostile work environments, and he did then say I could take the state-and-city authorized version instead, so my immediate problem is solved. But he emphasized that I shouldn’t tell anyone else because he doesn’t want people thinking they have other options, and I’m wondering if that’s as legally shady as it feels.

It’s weird, but as long as they offer accommodations as required under the Americans with Disabilities Act, they’re not breaking any law. It’s odd that they want to create their own (apparently badly done) training rather than using the ready-made one offered by the city (and even odder that they’re trying to claim the city’s training wouldn’t comply with city regulations), but given Kyle’s remark about it being a source of revenue, I’d bet you’re right that they charge the contractors’ companies for it. (Even that doesn’t fully make sense, but what else could it be? Is unqualified Kyle out there selling this to completely separate companies too?!)

The part about him telling you not to tell your colleagues that you’re getting this accommodation is sketchy — you have a legally protected right to talk with coworkers about working conditions (unless you’re a supervisor, in which case you don’t) — but the rest of it is legal.

3. If I’m graduating this spring, when should I apply for jobs?

I have a question about applying for jobs as a college senior. I can imagine that higher level jobs will have long hiring processes, but for entry-level office jobs is it okay to apply now, even though graduation is four months away? Or is it better to wait until closer to when a person will actually be available to start working?

Yes, start applying now. You might be too early for some jobs, but for a lot of them, the hiring process could easily take four months (if not longer).

4. Are there really so many nonprofit jobs?

You reference not-for-profit vs for-profit sectors a lot. I used to think I understood what nonprofit work was … like the Cancer Society or Doctors Without Borders or something. But you reference it so often, I’m beginning to wonder …. can there really be that many nonprofit jobs the U.S., or am I misunderstanding what it is?

Your international audience thanks you.

Nonprofits accounted for 12.8 million jobs in the U.S. — nearly 10% of private-sector employment — in 2022, the latest year with data available from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and there are 1.9 million registered nonprofits in the U.S.

But nonprofits aren’t just the type of advocacy or service-based charities you’re thinking of; they also include arts organizations, museums, trade associations, religious institutions, private foundations, fraternal organizations, chambers of commerce, civic leagues, and lots more.

5. How to ask for more vacation time instead of a raise

I’ve been with my employer for the better part of a decade. I’m a senior-level employee and have a lot of capital, get great reviews, etc. The work is challenging and rewarding and we help a lot of people. We aren’t expected to put in crazy hours, but I often feel like I’m close to my limit in terms of what I can reasonably do without sacrificing quality, and the work can be very draining. My employer is a small-ish but growing local business.

I’m in the U.S. and employees who have been there a few years get just over four weeks’ PTO annually, only some of which can roll over. We don’t have separate sick leave, so PTO covers illness and vacation.

What I want more than anything is more time off. I’d happily forgo a salary increase for a few years if I could get more PTO. I’m wondering how I can try to negotiate for this, what arguments I could use, and how much to ask for. I’m sure they won’t love the idea but I don’t think there’s any downside to asking, and if I was successful, it would be incredible. I’m even open to periodic unpaid leave. I just want more time to rest.

The next time it would be appropriate to ask for a raise, ask for this instead. You can be pretty straightforward about it: “The thing that I really want right now more than a raise is additional PTO. Would you be open to giving me two additional weeks of PTO per year in lieu of a raise?”

I picked two weeks because it’s a good solid chunk while still being reasonable, and also gives them room to come back with one week if they balk at two. You could also run the math on how many weeks of pay a typical raise there would be equivalent to, and factor that into your thinking too.

I am possibly done with PDXWLF. I ventured out to a specific spot tonight because I recognized the address and was confident they'd deliver. I'll do a photo post... actually right now:

The CD clad house. Yeah, I know this intersection. I know it would be worth the trip.

I went out early, thinking to grab a burrito and then meander/photowalk a mile to two towards it. Burrito, portable food, right? Yeah, the lady who made mine was maybe new and needed to wrap it in multiple layers of foil for it to hold together, and she blamed me for it being a mess because I didn't order rice in it. So, I basically wound up walking around eating a pile of food and soaked tortilla in a make-shift tin foil bowl. It was okay. (Honestly, I shouldn't have paid for for that mess, but there was only one place I could get food along my planned route. I just really need to stop relying on being able to grab food while out and about, it keeps going sideways.)

(You know the drill! You can ask here if you have a question you'd like answered!)

Favorite dessert to make?

Ha. So — I love to bake, but I am not really a Dessert Person. Like, there are specific desserts I like eating, but more often than not, I will just buy them because I apparently have fancy taste and my desires exceed my skills (or, you know, certain stuff is just annoying to make).

Anyway, all that to say, the list of desserts I have made and enjoyed making is pretty short, but we'll go ahead and run through it...

1). Chocolate Pie.

This is, as it sounds, chocolate pudding in a pie crust.

I don't like making pie crust, but pie crust that you make yourself at home is worlds better than anything you can buy frozen (alas!), and so I Suffer and Endure and Make It. :D

Chocolate Pie is Max's favorite and so I make it for him every Thanksgiving and sometimes for Christmas. These are the two occasions he knows it is safe to ask for chocolate pie.

2). Tiramisu.

It's not really baking, but! I have a solid method in my back pocket which does not involve raw eggs (eww), so.

Hard to go wrong with coffee, ladyfingers, and brandy (or rum) layered with whipped cream/marscapone and chocolate. Yum. I made one this year for Max's birthday and it was gone within about two days. :D

3). Macarons.

...I feel like someone is going to come out going WHAT at me, because I just said my desires exceed my skills, but!

Macarons are Just Okay. THERE, I SAID IT.

Anyway I wanted to prove to myself that I could make them, so I did. It ended up being surprisingly fun; they were not picture-perfect (I needed to whip my eggs more), but I am actually planning to make some apricot ones here in a couple of weeks and see if they work out better this time.

(I made blueberry and raspberry last time, per the request of the person I was making them for; they were Aggressively Fine, but if I'm doing jam, I want it to be strawberry or apricot. Certain People may laugh now.)

4). Danishes.

Again, this is one where I feel like people are going to go, what, but!

Laminated pastry is actually fun to make, though if I'm making puff pastry I prefer to use it for things like chicken pot pie or apple turnovers (which I don't add much sugar to, so I suppose they're borderline acceptable to eat for breakfast).

I made Danishes for my dad for Father's Day the last time I was out there for Father's Day, and the entire plate of them was gone within about thirty minutes. My brother-in-law ate, like, six. (They were, to be fair, not huge, but still!)

At some point in the next few weeks I am also planning to try my hand at making eclairs again, now that I've actually got the equipment for it (specifically, nice piping bags and such), so I guess that + the macarons will be it. Eclairs are probably the thing I buy most often at Safeway that makes me go, "ugh I do technically have the ability to do this but I'm lazy."

(To be fair to the Safeway nearest the house, though, their bakery is quite good. The eclairs I get there remind me of the ones I used to get from the bespoke bakery my mom's friend ran in Salt Lake, which is not something I can say of any other grocery store bakery I've gotten stuff from.)

Anyway.

Frequently, if it's Just Me And Max and it's not a special occasion but I want something dessert-y, it's cookies. I have a chocolate chip oatmeal cookie recipe memorized and have had it memorized since I perfected it when I was, like, 10.

("Perfect" according to my grandfather, who was Very Picky about cookies, but I digress. I'm fond of it! I don't think it's to anyone else's taste, but Max likes to dip them in coffee, so.)

There you go. :D

Unchecked use of technology and pandemic isolation have "reshaped" how teenagers develop—but it's not too late to intervene. This is the stark warning of educator Amber Chandler, who suggests teens are struggling with unprecedented levels of anxiety in this "scared new world," which presents a major challenge for parents and schools. However, the teacher says children can learn to flourish and thrive if given the right support.

I made them a beautiful cake in honor of Absolute starting this weekend, aka the Eden climax, aka one of the best enstars events~ Liz asked for chocolate cake and gave no other specifics, so this is what I came up with: dense chocolate cake with raspberry filling and cream cheese icing. It's incredibly rich, so we all nearly passed out after eating just a little bit XD

Oops?

Anyway, I'm actually super pleased with how it came out!!! I had a vision and actually managed to bring it to life- with some help from Pat. He made the stencil for the lotus flower and helped place a the beads for the lower border. I think I leveled up making large smooth sections of color (for the bits I wrote on) and just...wrangling this cake in general.....I love this cake but I do not love how delicate and crumbly it is. Even with a crumb coat, I was afraid it would still be a mess. And it WAS hard to work with, but not impossible.

I'm also really happy with both the gradient and these tassels~

My wife loved it, and honestly that's what matters the most!!!!

We also had szechuan delivered from one of Liz's favorite places, since they're not feeling great and didn't wanna go out ;w; Hopefully they'll be feeling better soon, since it's very unfair that they felt crummy on their birthday.

Also, Katsucon is this weekend XD So I'm sure they wanna feel better for that!!

Dear Father, it has been a month since my last confession.

I am so tired, y'all. I've been working overtime for the past three weeks trying to stash some money away for the inevitable basement bullshit and it's been exhausting. (You wouldn't think a job that requires sitting at a desk would be tiring, but I feel like somebody threw sand in my eyes by the end of the day.)

Permit-wrangler is still trying to find an engineer. Apparently the problem is that I can't just dig a hole and have an engineer look at it and yes the foundations are good, they have to figure out how to reverse-engineer whatever was done to create new drawings - and that's going to be expensive regardless.

I sicc'd permit-wrangler on the engineer who got the original permits. "Tell him if he helps me out I might leave him out of the lawsuit."

I looked out my window this morning and there was a huge raptor in the trees behind my house. Couldn't get a clear enough view to make a guess at what it was but at least twice the size of the red-tail hawks I normally see back there.

I reiterated to the venerable Lord Brock that no, he is not going outside no matter how much he bonks his head on the window. (He is enormously offended by the squirrels.)

***

Last time I visited my dad I took my laptop over and started quizzing him about family. His memory is shot, but he does remember incidents from his childhood. What's hilarious is that he remembers the kids who pissed him off - I suggested one possible connection and he was all, "Oh yeah, Joey, he visited from the States. What a little prick."

He also remembered the aunt who baked cookies and the heavy-drinking aunt who was a huge bruiser and all the men were afraid of her. So if they left an impression he had me stories about them, even if he doesn't remember how they're related to him.

***

Somebody here was talking about how Skip The Dishes made up a new address for them, and it reminded me that I had the exact experience last time I ordered from them. The system sent the driver to an address a couple of blocks away and I only caught it because I got the ping that the order was five minutes away and when I looked at the map I didn't recognize the streets.

Calling their customer service did nothing because the driver was already showing as "arrived". But as soon as I hung up I got a call from the driver because the address they had given him was a park, so I was able to redirect him and get my food after all.

We have reached the part of the winter where I start to worry that I have run out of places to put snow. My yard is maybe five feet square and the snow is already piled up in a pyramid.

I keep wanting to go out with a hose and ice it up and build an igloo or something.
