writing process questions from
getyourwordsout
1. Do you write your first draft by hand, or digitally?
Digitally for sure. I don't have the patience for longhand and I never learned shorthand.
2. Do you have a writer’s notebook?
I have several notebooks but I rarely use them. Instead I have a bunch of google docs with one or two sentences in them. I've started using Scrivener in the past two months though, and that helps with the organization, too.
3. Planner, pantser, or planter?
I plot a little and pants the rest, so Planter
4. What is your favorite place to write?
I mostly just write in my chair in the living room. Sometimes when the weather is nice I try the porch, but then the problem of seeing the screen comes up. Mostly just... in my chair, in the living room. Where I am right now.
5. What is your least favorite place to write?
Anywhere outside my home. I'm agoraphobic so coffee shops (which I don't actually have around here) would be out of the question.
6. What is your favorite writer’s drink?
Coffee at the beginning of a session, water and/or water with some caffeinated flavoring later on.
7. What do you like to eat when you’re writing?
Nothing. Too distracting.
8. Do you like to write where it’s quiet, or with noise? If noise, what kind?
Music. I listen to Dubstep or other electronic music. and sometimes music with lyrics if I know it really well and it won't distract me. Favorite playlists to write by on Spotify are 'Dubstep Don' and 'Altar'.
9. Do you have a favorite writing season? (eg. spring, summer, fall, winter)
Not at all. I write about the same amount year-round.
10. Do you make imageboards or storyboards or playlists before you write a story? Do you do them during? After?
Sometimes I do put up aesthetics or collections of characters on Pinterest in locked boards. Usually right before I start writing or when I've just started.
11. How do you feel about worldbuilding?
It happens for me fairly easily without thinking, but then even better when I do think. I don't usually have too hard a time with it.
12. How many drafts does your work go through before you’re ready to show it to people or publish?
My close friends will look at my first drafts. My BFF and a couple trusted others know damn well it's just a draft and that it'll get better. Sometimes other people don't seem to realize that lol
13. How do you feel about editors and editing?
Editors/betas are an important part of the writing process. Having a good developmental beta at the beginning or throughout is imperative. Not a nitpicker, but someone who will ask questions or get excited about certain elements I hadn't thought about at first. so they can help you tease out the true potential. I am less likely to use a final beta reader for fanfiction, but for pro stuff, you bet your sweet ass I will use one and listen to their suggestions.
14. What is your favorite part of the writing process?
Almost all of it, but especially when I really get into it and the words are flying off my fingers and I am in the story at that moment.
15. What do you do when you have no inspiration, but have to put something on the page/get that story finished?
I listen to the music I picked for that project and look at the images on its pinterest board, reread my notes I wrote at the beginning, try to find the spark that got me writing it in the first place. Cheerleaders help too.
16. What do you do when you have lots of inspiration, but no way to actually sit down and write?
I am a grumpy little bitch when this happens. Luckily it doesn't happen too often.
17. Have you ever dreamed something that ended up in a story?
Maybe? I don't remember my dreams very well.
18. How often do you hit save/back up your work?
I try to use programs that do that automatically. If I'm working in Scrivener, I back up everything to Box once a day.
19. What is your favorite punctuation mark?
em dash!
20. Have you ever gone to school for writing? Would you?
I have very little formal education. I'd like to try a workshop sometime on novel writing, but it would have to be a good one. I've heard some of them are bullshit. idk, I think I get more education on my own by actually DOING the writing.
21. How do you get better at writing? Do you read articles, blogs, or books about writing for tips and tricks? Watch videos? Make it up as you go along? Something else?
All of the above, plus practice. Years and years of practice.
22. What’s something you wish you learned earlier as a writer?
It's okay to suck. We all suck at first, and then frequently suck even as we go on. It's okay. If something sucks, then just learn from it and try to do better next time. Also, it's not a straight line up. You may write something amazing and then write a flop. If writing quality was a graph, it would be all jagged, but the overall trend would be up. Just not straight up.
23. What is the first thing you remember writing?
In 9th grade, I wrote a story about a girl visiting her... friend? mother? in the hospital. I remember my writing partner telling me it was flat, and that I needed to add more sensory information, like the scent of antiseptic in the hospital. I'd love to say that was the beginning of my obsession with sensory info in fiction, but to this day that's something I still struggle with. I tend to focus more on feelings than things like sight/smell/sound.
24. What is the last thing you worked on?
Can't tell you, shhh. It's a secret exchange fic.
25. Your perfect writing day would be…
Just about like every day but instead of getting interrupted in the middle of something, there are no interruptions at all. :)
Digitally for sure. I don't have the patience for longhand and I never learned shorthand.

It also looks like all the features could be overwhelming and complicated to use.
