my letter to governor crist
Dear Gov. Crist,
My name is Melissa Anthony and I'm asking you to veto the managed care bill (House and Senate Bill Related to Medicaid Reform and Implementation of HMO Management of the HCBS Medicaid Waiver HB 7723). I am the mother of a fourteen year old girl with autism, cerebral palsy, and profound mental retardation. Her name is Meghan Kristyne Anthony, and she is on Medicaid and the Medicaid Waiver program. She is a wonderful girl with a loving spirit and a wicked sense of humor. She is loved by everyone who comes in contact with her, including her Support Coordinator, Tim Herring.
We have been blessed by Tim Herring's trained advocacy and caring nature. To lose him would be a blow to our family.
We have also been blessed by our Medicaid Waiver provider, Melody Smith. Melody provides the much needed respite and personal care for Meghan, and has been a part of our family for ten years.
If this Bill is implemented, our family will lose Tim and Melody. They are small town people with small independent businesses. They cannot compete with large HMOs.
If I, personally, lose the support of Tim and Melody, I will be overburdened. I am not trained to advocate for my daughter myself. I need them in my daughter's life, to root for her and help take care of her, to love her and support us. An HMO will not do this.
There is also the question of doctors and specialists. It is hard enough to find a good doctor who specializes in child neurology and disabilities. As it is, we travel hours across the state to visit Meg's doctors. If this Bill is put into action, we will likely lose those doctors and have to find new ones. We have built trust and respect with Meg's doctors and they have been caring for her for years. A new doctor not only effects travel time and relationships, but also my daughter's mental state. She is comfortable with who she sees now, and changes negatively affect her mental and emotional state.
I know we are but one family, but there are tens of thousands of stories like ours. Please veto this Bill.
Yours sincerely,
Melissa Anthony

HMOs are a determent to patient care in many ways. It's my big complaint against mail order drugs - no one oversees what you take which is a disaster for many people.
