Detective L thoughts
This started as a comment to
riventhorn but I figured it fit better in my own journal once it got too long. :P
15 - I've been partially suspicious of the good psychologist since he showed up, but I thought that was just me overidentifying with Luo Fei and sensing a rival. lol
I was not satisfied with Dr. Huo's 'confession'. It didn't fit with the rest of the series' pattern of personal stakes of the criminals. I was expecting Dr. Huo to say the original dead diamond dude was actually his father or uncle, and he was getting revenge for him since he was swindled. But then he never said that I was like WHAT?? Greed? That's too mundane for Detective L. So I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. And it did, sorta.
My first read of the prison yard scene was that Captain was getting out right then and Dr. Huo was the distraction he needed. But since no one else seems to think that, I'm now confused wtf that scene was trying to show. I couldn't decipher Dr. Huo's expression at all.
But I'm now wondering what exactly was going on when Dr. Huo examined Captain (and declared him incompetent and not faking his dementia). Was Dr. Huo turned then? Or did he maneuver into position in order to get that particular case, having been turned before? IS he turned and working for Captain, or does he have some other nefarious plan to somehow murder Captain? I think the former is much more likely, and he's working for Captain somehow.
Oh, and before I move on to 16, how cute was Luo Fei's realization that he's caught feelings for Xiaoman? I love how he stays with Ben all night. And looks to HIM for feelings talk. I love their friendship, and I'm firmly in the OT3 camp with these three.
The extra at the end of 15 was adorable. WE ARE A SERIOUS DETECTIVE SHOW.
16 - I was so excited to see backstory! Luo Fei and Ben working together on the past case! Was Ben his partner? Did Ben leave regular police work to become the coroner after Luo Fei left because he couldn't work with anyone else? I just wonder about these things. They seem very close here (as they usually do) and it just makes my heart sing. I love the moment when Luo Fei looks at Ben for encouragement and Ben, of course, gives it to him immediately. They are so cute.
This is the first case I want to watch through my fingers. Not just the abuse/torture/whatever parts, which so far are blessedly fade to black, but the scene in the mental hospital. At least they didn't make it like, torture porn. Many times inpatient facilities are shown to be nightmares (like literal scenes from my nightmares) but it didn't look TOO bad. I've seen bad portrayals of mental hospitals that just. Ugh.I'm looking at you, Teen Wolf. Go fuck yourself. So it wasn't as bad as it could have been. I felt so bad for the survivor. I forget her name but her PTSD was really not that badly handled? Hard to watch, though.
I am WORRIED about Xiaoman. The crazy serial killer has his eyes on her now and while I know she will survive, I don't want her going through anything rough. I hate when female characters have to go through bullshit so they can come out the other end stronger. Please please, show, let her kick his ass if he tries to do anything, or let her get out on her own (she's quick and smart enough). I don't mind a little Luo Fei and Ben angst while they worry about her too, but I really hope they don't make her a damsel in distress.

Neither was I, but that's because I had a formative suspicion that HE was actually the current "Captain" (as I believe it's more like a rank than a name). Now I'm not so sure anymore-- could still be? Could that whole thing be a set up just to get Huo into the prison? Why? He had plenty of time to "communicate" with the old Captain when testing him. Dunno. He looked pretty at ease getting the snot beat out of him, is all I'm sayin'. So, that prison yard scene was a set up for something, sure, but lordy I got no idea what. ???
OT3 BABY THAT'S MY JAM WITH THIS SHOW omg I adore Ben so much. I love how loose and easy he is with Luo Fei, and yes, I love that backstory moment where LF looked to him for encouragement and GOT IT. And I love how teasing Ben is with LF about Xiaoman. Like, he's not going to cut LF any slack whatsoever and I am here for that. :)
re: Ep16 I'm with you there, this arc is creeping me out. I think the serial killer has eyes on her b/c of LF, though.
Meanwhile I've looked at the opening and closing credits and realized that the white party dress Xiaoman wears in the closing shots of that fancy party is the same dress she's wearing when she screams at the camera in the opening and now I'm pretty convinced this series is going to pull a reichenbach falls. *bites nails*

Ben liked to watch them together, liked to see their secrets played out with their hands and mouths, liked the sly ways they looked for him in the midst of their passions.

I think I mind a little less Xiaoman needing rescue once in awhile because she has mostly been the successful brawn on the team. But I hope they don't go the normal route of making her a damsel constantly once the romantic subplot starts in earnest.

I can't wait! :D

That would make me weep. She's such an amazing character.

I have very mixed feelings about this next case. I am not a fan of the fact that it is almost always women who are the victims in these sorts of serial killer/torture scenarios. They could just as easily have the killer go after Luo Fei and Xiaoman has to rescue him. On the other hand, I will admit that I would not say no to the h/c feelings that would ensue were Xiaoman to get kidnapped and have Luo Fei totally frantic to find her. We will see how they handle it!
OT3!!!!

Ugh, I hate that we can talk and talk about it but it's ultimately down to the show. Lol it sucks that we have no say.
OT3!!!!

We also don't know yet why Luo Fei hated him from the start - I still suspect backstory. But Luo Fei also trusted his word on Captain's mental state, and didn't think he was going to be dangerous, so whatever that backstory is, it's got to be something highly personal.

I am not sure that there's backstory. I took his dislike to be more of, "Oh, here's another smartass professional so-and-so who might hinder my investigations rather than help. I don't work with anyone (who isn't Xiaoman or Ben)." But then he did trust his expertise so... I really don't know.

Anyway, totally feeling you on the impatience!

I definitely read it that the whole safe/fire murders crime by Dr Huo was so he could get himself into the prison, maybe to connive with Captain so he could escape? Or for some other nefarious plan??
Also, I really like that it seems like Ben and Luo Fei were previously partners!

I just adore Ben. I grin every time he's on screen. :DDD
