Wow, this looks really good! I only know vector graphics from architectural CAD, but this made me want to check out Illustrator and Inkscape. (Oh, I just noticed that this might be me accomplishing Day 5 of the Snowflake Challenge!)
I did this in Illy, but I recommend that if you want to go open source, go with Inkscape and don't look back. (or choose Illustrator and forget Inkscape). It's REALLY confusing to go back and forth between the two, so choosing one and sticking with it is smart.
Inkscape has THIS, though: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/ It's not fancy, but it will teach you the program. I'm still working my way through it. (and there are also lots of tuts for Inkscape, they're just harder to find than the Illy tuts)

Illy, on the pro side, has TONS of tutorials out there, especially on this site: http://vector.tutsplus.com/ (I"d start with this to familiarize myself with the tools: http://vector.tutsplus.com/sessions/guides-to-illustrator-tools/ )

GOOD LUCK. :D
