children of tomorrow -- part 2
first part
(also, this part has mikey kissing gerard's neck. or maybe it was vice versa. but it's okay, it's just the sex drugs. :D?)
The ankh in his pocket was heavy. It was like Gerard could feel nothing but that.
He spent hours lying in his bed, looking at the ceiling, wondering just what was Outside. Wondering if he could pose as a Runner without being Terminated. Without being attacked by the City's people. Wondering if Frank knew something. He had the tattoo, didn't he? And he had strange ideas.
Gerard had so much he wanted to do in the few months he had left. Months that were now taken from him. He'd wanted to meet Michael 3. He'd wanted to get to know his sibling. Now he had about a day left in the City before...
He would find Michael 3 now.
Gerard got up and got dressed in an off-duty tunic. It was still black, but there was a bit of red on it. He went over to his console and asked it where Michael 3 was at that moment.
“Michael 3 is located in the Love Shop,” the computer said in pleasant tones.
Gerard rolled his eyes. When he'd been a Green, he'd gone to the Love Shop a lot. The music was always blaring, the strobe lights were always flickering, the booze was always flowing, and Sublime was the mildest drug you could get. Oh, and it was pretty much one big orgy all the time. But Gerard had gotten tired of the nonstop hedonist lifestyle when he'd become a Red, using his spare time for art instead.
Finding Michael in the the Love Shop was going to be a nightmare, but Gerard was willing to try.
He laced up his boots and left a message for Ray if he came by. A short, “Feeling better, went to the Love Shop,” would be enough.
The Shop wasn't as crowded as it was at night, and Gerard slipped inside. Immediately he was assaulted by the smell of sex and vapor drugs, which seemed to thicken in his throat as he moved closer to the other people, and the pounding of music in his ears. It was dark in the Shop except for the strobes, and it took a minute for Gerard's eyes to get used to the lack of proper light.
He started searching for Michael. He didn't know what he would do when he found him, just that he had to at least meet his sibling. He didn't care that there were no biological relationships in the City. Knowing your – he didn't know the word he was looking for, but knowing his … his blood was important to him. Seeing the baby once she was born had been important and this was, too.
Someone sprayed a drug in his face, and Gerard recognized it as one of his old favorites: Resplendent. It had a blue vapor and did incredible things to the senses. He felt his cock harden almost instantly.
But his mind was still intact. He hadn't come across one of the more altering substances yet, and he hoped to keep it that way. He was there to search for Michael and that was all.
He turned around slowly, scanning the faces he could see. Everything was so confusing and people moved and writhed together everywhere. Some people wore masks, or paint on their faces, to further disguise themselves. It made it even more difficult to find his sibling, but then … there.
Michael 3 was watching him. He was nude from the waist up, and a dark-haired beauty lay in his lap. Michael absently played with her hair, but his eyes were all for Gerard. He looked curious.
Someone slipped a hand into Gerard's tunic and traced electric patterns on his chest. It was distracting because it felt incredible, but nothing would keep him from Michael now that he was just a few steps away. Gerard walked forward. He had to dodge a few people and hands kept distracting him, but then he was in front of his sibling for the first time and …
And he had nothing to say.
“I'm Gerard,” he said awkwardly.
“Mikey.” He was thin and pale, but his eyes were lined neatly with kohl and there was just something about him that made Gerard feel good. Happy. Mikey nodded at whatever look was on Gerard's face and motioned for him to sit beside him. “You were watching me at Carrousel.” He took out a decorative vaporizer and offered it to Gerard.
Not knowing what was in the vaporizer, Gerard shook his head.
Mikey took a long hit of whatever was in it and then smiled for the first time. “You want me?”
Gerard bit his lip. Mikey was beautiful, but he wanted something else from him. Something that meant blood. Connection. He shook his head.
Mikey tilted his head and stared at Gerard in what looked to be fascination. Gerard kept his hand hidden and thought, I only have this. I should tell him. “We had the same seed mother.”
Mikey blinked. “How do you know?”
Gerard shrugged. “A friend checked for me.”
“Why?” Mikey asked.
“Because I wanted to know. Because.”
The woman in Mikey's lap got bored and wandered off to join in with someone else. Gerard moved closer to Mikey and looked at him hard. “Didn't you ever wish you had someone who was yours?”
Mikey looked away, staring at something only he could see, maybe. “I have plenty of friends.”
“I have friends. Not friends, not like that. I mean. Shit. I don't even know what I mean,” Gerard said. “But we're tied together. We have the same blood.”
Understanding seemed to light Mikey's eyes for a moment, but then he smiled and said, “I think you just want me,” and leaned in to kiss Gerard's neck.
Gerard closed his eyes and wrapped his arms around Mikey, hugging him close and feeling something he'd never felt before. All he knew was that his lifeclock was flashing and this would be the last chance he had with his sibling.
Mikey stopped kissing him and just leaned into the embrace. “You're such a freak,” he mumbled, close enough to Gerard's ear that he could hear.
Gerard laughed. The drug made everything feel better than it seemed possible, and embracing was always one of his favorite things. Hugs. He was hugging his sibling.
He looked up and saw Ray standing across the room, looking at them curiously. Gerard let go and beckoned him over. “That's my friend, Ray.”
Mikey looked at Ray with interest in his eyes. His posture changed from friendly to seductive, and Ray gave him a small smile.
“Ray, I'd like you to meet Mikey. Michael 3. But he goes by Mikey,” Gerard said.
Ray sat down on Mikey's other side. “Hi.” Then to Gerard, “Did you tell him?”
Gerard nearly jumped. There was a lot he wasn't telling anyone at all. But then he nodded; he knew what Ray meant.
“Why you're obsessed with biology, I'll never know,” Ray said.
Mikey offered him a hit of his vaporizer and Ray smiled and took him up on it. As he exhaled a light pink vapor, Gerard realized it was an experimental sex drug. How Mikey got his hands on it, he didn't know. Gerard only knew about it because he had insomnia and had been wandering the lab corridors at night and had seen it through one of the glass walls as the 'bots ran it through a plastic lung.
“Whatsit called?” Ray slurred, leaning into Mikey's side.
“I'm calling it Rapture for the time being,” Mikey said. He was smiling and rubbing Ray's arm now. The music changed in the room and Mikey pulled a disgusted face. There was a console directly behind him and he did something to make the music change. The crowd made appreciative noises and Ray looked utterly besotted.
“I thought I was the only one who did that,” Ray said. He loved messing with the preprogrammed music on the computers.
Mikey looked interested, but then the drug took over and Ray lost his train of thought and started kissing Mikey's jaw. Mikey looked at Gerard and held out his hand for him to join.
Gerard reached out but then quickly drew back. He'd almost showed off his blinking lifeclock. He shook his head and stood, giving Mikey one last, longing look. “I have to go. I left work early today and I should really make the time up.”
Mikey gave him an uncomprehending expression. Gerard got that a lot. No one else in the city, unless they chose to have a shop for extra credits, worked. But Sandmen were appointed to their jobs from birth. It was a strange culture shift between the two worlds, and Gerard was mostly used to it.
Ray was pushing Mikey over onto his back and climbing on top of him. Gerard laughed and waved goodbye. He hid his other hand behind his back. “Have fun with that one.”
He didn't know if this would be the last time he saw them. He blew a kiss towards them both and made his way out of the Shop. He had a mission to fulfill.
He had to get the hell Outside, whatever that meant.
